The highly-anticipated Hearth & Home update for Valheim has finally been released and with it comes several new items and experiences. One of these additions is a new farmable plant: onions. Any real-life chef can attest to the onion’s vibrant flavor in a number of dishes, and the same can be true in Valheim. So far, there only seems to be one recipe for this new plant, that being onion soup.

The dish grants a measly 12 health, but a whopping 60 stamina upon consumption. The soup requires 3 onions to create. Cooking this recipe does require an upgrade to the cauldron which is also newly available in the Hearth and Home update. These upgrades are produced similarly to workbench upgrades. Players will need to have their cauldron at level 2 to cook the onion soup recipe.

Players can hardly reap the benefits of this new plant, though, without first knowing how to acquire the onion seeds. Before the release of the Hearth and Home update, there were no collectible seeds to be found in the Mountains biome. Different seeds have been obtainable in different biomes – blueberries and carrots in the Black Forest; turnips in the Swamps; barley, flax, and cloudberries in the Plains to name a few – and players finally have a seed to scavenge for in the Mountains. Deep in this frozen, treacherous wasteland, Valheim players will find onion seeds.

How to Farm Onion Seeds in Valheim

Like with every other cultivated plant in Valheim, players must first create a cultivator out of bronze before farming of the onions can begin. Once the cultivator is made and equipped, players can choose which seeds to work with from their inventory. Again, like other plants, onions take 3 in-game days to grow. They can then be collected to be eaten raw, cooked into the stamina-filled onion soup recipe discussed above, or replanted. For every onion planted, players receive 3 more onion seeds, essentially tripling their potential for onion farming.

There are plenty of other major changes and additions that have come with Valheim’s Hearth & Home update. Players can craft new items like the obliterator and the cartography desk, they can tame and ride lox for easier travel, they can gorge themselves on the 12 new consumable items, and much more. The update has essentially overhauled food, health, and stamina while giving new and old players exciting additions to their homes and the surrounding lands. Iron Gate Studios has been listening to fan feedback and incorporated what was feasible in the best way they knew how.
