The Mistlands update coming to Valheim will introduce exciting new mechanics like big traps, a new forge and new varieties of fungi. The survival sandbox game, developed by Iron Gate Studio, has been in early access since February 2021. Earlier this year Iron Gate Studio teased a Mistland update coming to Valheim in 2022, and it appears that the expansion will contain a plethora of exciting new features.

Based on Norse mythology, Valheim casts players as a deceased Viking warrior who appears in the titular realm after their death. Odin the All-Father tasks the player with defeating the evil creatures that stalk the realm, but to do so the player must gain strength by surviving and thriving in the harsh wilderness. Valheim uses a procedural generation system to craft its worlds, with the Norse realm containing various biomes including mountains, oceans, the Mistlands and the Ashlands. Iron Gate Studio has continued to improve and expand the title over time through expansion, with the upcoming Mistlands update adding spiders to Valheim alongside a new bow and other features.

In a recent Steam post, Valheim details many of the unique new features coming in the Mistlands update. The blog post reveals that players will need new weapons to contend with the new threats being added to the Mistlands region, and the game's normal forge is incapable of crafting them. Concept art for a mystical new crafting station, which will be used to create Mistlands-tier weapons, depicts a workbench that combines science and magic. Bizarre new varieties of Mistlands fungi will be used to cook new recipes, while a new big trap will let players catch enormous enemies provided they manage to avoid their own trap.

The upcoming Mistlands expansion will be a follow-up to a Valheim frost caves update that released back in February. The exciting expansion added frost caves to the game's mountains, allowing players to explore the dark dungeons and face off against new threats. Bats, cultists and Ulvs stalk Valheim's frost caves, but by fighting past these foes and exploring players can discover hidden chests filled with abundant loot. The frost caves update also served to add Steam Deck optimization to the game, allowing Valheim players to take the survival sandbox experience on the go.

The Mistlands update promises to give Valheim players a truly unique new biome to explore, but the upcoming expansion will also add a range of other content too. Big traps will give players a unique new tactic to use while hunting or fighting, and the new mushrooms and magical forge will evolve the game's crafting mechanics. While the Mistlands update has no set release date, Valheim fans can look forward to a wide range of interesting new content.
