Finding a suitable location to start a base is important for survival in Valheim. Players can tuck their homes in the trees, find a small meadow, or build along the seas to enjoy the beach. Players wanting quick and easy shelter may choose to search out a collection of Abandoned Houses in a Meadows biome, but these abandoned villages may not be as safe as they appear. While the structures could be empty and useable for a low-level player seeking shelter, there is also the risk players have stumbled across one of Valheim's Draugr Villages.

Draugr Villages have a few important warning signs players can scan for if they aren't ready to take on high-level enemies. A Draugr Village often has bigger structures than Valheim's abandoned villages and always has a log fence to mark its perimeter. Like abandoned villagers, Draugr Villages spawn in Meadows biomes, so it may be easy to mistakenly stumble into one searching for safety if these warnings are missed.

If a player finds a Draugr Village early on in their game, they may want to mark its location and return at a later time. Players who have crafted Valheim's stronger armor and better weapons have a better chance of taking on one of these infested spaces to create a new base or loot the chests hidden in the decaying houses. However, they will need to battle the Draugr and Draugr Elites spawning from the Body Piles located around the village before they can enter its structures. Draugr can be formidable foes, but they drop useful resources, like Entrails, which players can use to craft items like Sausages.

Players who find themselves in a Draugr Village will want to gain the high ground and use a bow to attack its undead inhabitants from a distance. This will increase the chances of survival and give the player a vantage point to spot other potential Body Piles spawning Draugr that would otherwise be hard to see. Players will want to research and carry some of Valheim's Mead potions, too, to make sure they can heal quickly if they find themselves ambushed.

Converting abandoned structures into homes is an excellent way for new players to learn the sometimes tricky building mechanics in Valheim. They can play around with the type of permanent housing they wish to build, while still having a refurbished hut to temporarily call home. Some players have even used these villages as the blueprints for sprawling base designs. This can be especially helpful for those playing with friends, as the multiple structures allow everyone a basic home until they expand. Finding a home can be a dangerous adventure, but once the dead are cleared out, Valheim's Draugr Villages are a good fit for a solid homestead.
