Ancient Rome collides with Norse purgatory in the latest and greatest Valheim player creation, as a scale replica of Rome's Colosseum has been built in-game. An early access indie title, the Viking-themed survival sandbox was released in February 2021 to overwhelming acclaim, and the game is expected to reach 8 million copies sold on Steam by the end of June.

Valheim’s easy-to-use, hard-to-master building mechanics have captured the imagination of many since its release, and a command console-enabled creative mode is available for players who wish to simply build without the restriction of collecting materials and fighting mobs. While there are many inspired builds out there achieved in vanilla gameplay, there are many creations that are simply not possible without the use of mods to push the boundaries of what is possible, with one player creating an enormous pirate ship to sail Valheim's ocean using a popular mod that allows full boat editing.

Reddit user VociferousBiscuit has truly flexed their architectural skills in Valheim, showing off their Colosseum replica. A massive structure, the in-game Colosseum is a half scale replica of the real thing, but has been built to be as authentic as possible, even including the exact amount of arches and seating levels. Some creative license was used for areas where there was not enough information to build from, such as the imperial box, where the Roman Emperor sat. Inner passageways to the seating areas and parts of the exterior were also built from the Viking architect’s imagination, and some inner walls were removed to accommodate the building’s scaled-down size.

What’s perhaps even more impressive is that the extremely detailed work was built without mods, instead only using Valheim's creative mode to forgo the requirement of collecting the colossal amount of resources required. While the Viking architect had originally planned on a full-scale build, the game’s height restrictions forced them to scale the building down to half-size instead. The replica Colosseum would not be considered complete without a few fights in its arena, and VociferousBiscuit’s Viking-turned-Gladiator used the opportunity to take on a Troll and spectate a fight between some Draugrs and wolves.

Valheim has continued to be the latest go-to canvas for many awe-inspiring builds thanks to the endless imagination of its players. This particular builder has done a great job bringing ancient Roman entertainment to the Viking era with their Colosseum build, and the battles in the arena are sure to make time pass quicker as the wait for Valheim's Hearth and Home update continues. There is no set release date for the game's first major update, but it can be expected sometime in 2021. Hearth and Home will bring with it new building items and features, which will no doubt aid in the creation of even grander structures.
