Although it's still in Steam Early Access, Valheim has become incredibly popular since it launched on February 2nd. The Viking survival game has fantasy elements and epic environments. Currently, there are nine biomes in the game, including three that are still developing. Here's what fans should know about each one.

The first biome players can explore is Meadows, which is filled with trees and low-level enemies. The scenery is beautiful, but it's mostly a way for players to get used to surviving in Valheim's world. The Black Forest is another wooded area with more hostile enemies and a darker setting, while the Swamp in Valheim is even more treacherous. These are the more wooded areas in the game, but Valheim has more to offer than just forests and swamps.

The Plains is a warm and sunny biome that's home to fulings, which are goblin-like enemies that roam around other biomes - including the meadows and forests - after nightfall. Even with the best weapons in Valheim, fulings can be dangerous in bigger groups, so players will need to exercise caution. Mountains are another biome in the game, and they provide treacherous terrain and cold, snowy areas that can cause players to start freezing. Meanwhile, Ocean biomes are found off the coast, and their deep waters are a home to sea serpents and other monsters.

Valheim's 3 Biomes Still In-Game But In Development

There are also three additional biomes that are in Valheim but are still being developed. As such, players who stumble upon these biomes will find mostly unfinished environments that feel pretty empty. The Mistlands are a foggy, wooded area and the Ashlands is an island filled with flame-like creatures called surtlings. Deep North is another snow-covered environment, but it's fairly vacant and doesn't even give off the freezing debuff.

Since Valheim's early access period is ongoing, these biomes will be filled out and improved over time. For now, it's unclear when the three in-development biomes will be finished, although they'll likely be finished up sometime within Valheim's first year of early access. This means the nine biomes currently in the game are:

  • Meadows
  • Dark Forest
  • Swamp
  • Mountains
  • Plains
  • Ocean
  • Mistlands
  • Ashlands
  • Deep North

It's also important to remember that Valheim is a work in progress, so these biomes will certainly change before the game is fully released. More biomes will likely be added into the game in the future as well, even though there are currently nine available for players to explore already.
