Adult Swim producer Jason DeMarco announced that the anime adaptation of Junji Ito's acclaimed horror manga Uzumaki will be delayed until 2022. Ito is a legendary figure in the manga industry, having written some of the most iconic horror manga of all time – most notably Tomie and Gyo. His works are instantly recognizable due to their surreal storylines and nightmarish illustrations. Uzumaki is among Ito's most beloved stories and spawned an anime adaptation that was originally slated to release in 2020, prior to the worldwide pandemic. However, fans of Ito's work may have to wait a little longer.

Senior Vice President of Adult Swim Jason DeMarco, announced yesterday that the anime adaptation of Uzumaki would be pushed back to October of 2022. Despite the delay, DeMarco insists that the production is "coming together beautifully" and that the sh0w's director, Hiroshi Nagahama, "is a genius." You can read DeMarco's full Tweet thread below.

Uzumaki isn't the first of Ito's works to receive an anime adaptation. The aforementioned Tomie and Gyo have both received animated iterations, as well as the more recent anthology series Junji Ito Collection – all of which have been met with middling to low reviews by both fans and critics. However, it seems as though the crew behind Uzumaki are taking their time with this latest adaptation. Indeed, the show's heavily stylized black-and-white animation style already marks a significant stylistic departure from its predecessors. Hopefully a little extra time in the creative oven will permit Uzumaki to be the best Ito adaptation yet.
