Amazon has released the first Utopia trailer for its upcoming conspiracy thriller series. Based on the UK series of the same name, a new version of the Utopia story is coming to life thanks to Gillian Flynn. The best-selling author behind Gone Girl and writer of HBO's Sharp Objects spent the last several years developing her take on the concept. Utopia was originally set up as an HBO series with David Fincher attached to direct, but the development process led Amazon Prime Video to be the official home of a Fincher-less series.

The story of Utopia follows a group of fans who meet online and become friends due to their shared love of a comic called "Utopia." However, as these fans dive deeper into the content of the comic, they soon discover that "Utopia" is filled with hidden messages that predict real-life threats humanity is facing. As each new conspiracy is uncovered by the group, they take it upon themselves to save the world from these threats. The ensemble includes Jessica Rothe as Samantha, John Cusack as Dr. Kevin Christie, Rainn Wilson as Dr. Michael Stearns, and Sasha Lane as Jessica Hyde - the central character in the "Utopia" comics.

As part of Comic-Con@Home, Amazon Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for Utopia. The trailer arrived during Utopia's Comic-Con@Home panel, which featured the cast and Flynn talking about the upcoming eight-episode series. There is only about one minute of footage to highlight the series Flynn has created, but it wastes no time setting up the conspiracy elements Utopia will play with.

The release of Utopia's trailer and the Comic-Con@Home panel comes on the heels of Amazon finally starting to promote the upcoming show. The first photos from the series were released in anticipation of the panel and provided a first look at the cast, who can now be seen in action thanks to the trailer. In addition to the cast members already mentioned, Utopia stars Dan Byrd as Ian, Ashleigh LaThrop as Becky, Desmin Borges as Wilson Wilson, Javon Walton as Grant, Farrah Mackenzie as Alice, Christopher Denham as Arby, and Cory Michael Smith as Thomas Christie.

After this promising first trailer, it would appear that Amazon could have a timely series on its hands with Utopia. The comic book element could draw in a large audience due to the popularity of comic adaptations in recent years in movies and TV shows. But, Utopia also has some viral pandemic element to it, which will certainly play differently when the show is released this fall as the world still deals with the coronavirus pandemic.
