USA's rookie football drama Necessary Roughness, premieres in June, and the first footage from the show has hit the web in the form of a TV spot.
Necessary Roughness follows a tenacious therapist named Danielle Santino (Callie Thorne, Rescue Me) assigned to ensure the mental well-being of a pro wide receiver (Mehcad Brooks). "Dr. Dani" must juggle the pressures of being a divorced single mother with the stress of managing the ultra-egos of football superstars.
The show is based on the true story of Dr. Donna Dannenfelser, a psychotherapist who gained notoriety when she became the team mental health clinician for the New York Jets. Kevin Dowling (Army Wives, Joan of Arcadia) serves as executive producer.
USA has ordered twelve episodes of Necessary Roughness, which should let it run right up to the start of the real NFL season (if there is one).

Lead actress Thorne is no stranger to cable dramas after six seasons as 9-11 widow Sheila Keefe on Rescue Me, which ends this year. Fans of police procedurals will recognize her as Detective Ballard on 90s staple Homicide: Life on the Street, and she's also had arcs on Prison Break and The Wire.
Brooks should be comfortable as the cocky wide receiver TK, considering his role as a college basketball star in Glory Road. He's also had roles in True Blood and ill-fated legal drama The Deep End. Other actors involved include love interest Marc Blucas (Inglourious Basterds, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Scott Cohen (Love and Other Drugs).
It's hard to judge from a mere 50-second trailer, but USA has a strong history of creating enjoyable shows on the lighter side of drama. Considering the headlines surrounding the antics of professional athletes and the looming NFL strike, Necessary Roughness could easily take advantage of current events for some solid storytelling. The fact that Dr. Dani is comically uneducated on American football (she can't tell a safety from a slant route) is a nice touch.
Does USA have another hit on its hands? We'll find out when Necessary Roughness premieres June 29th at 10PM.
