Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins revives the film side of the G.I. Joe franchise with an origin story for one of its most iconic characters, the hero of the title, played by Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians). It also adds new characters and lore, including the backstory for the infamous Baroness played by Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist). The action-filled film premieres in theaters on July 23.

Corberó, who plays Cobra’s fearless leader, spoke to Screen Rant about taking on her first villain role and stepping into the world of Snake Eyes.

Screen Rant: Is it intimidating, stepping into the world of G.I. Joe, knowing that it's had two previous movies [2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation] and 40 years of content behind it?

Úrsula Corberó: It's intimidating at the beginning, but then when you are getting into it, it's super fun.

Given that your character's arc in the first film was a little more damsel in distress, how did it feel to see a different and more faithful take on The Baroness in Snake Eyes?

Úrsula Corberó: The Baroness is amazing. She's a very powerful woman; she's always in control of everything. She's clever, she's bold, she's manipulative. She has everything [for me] to have fun with this character. I was enjoying it all the time. It was my first villain, also.

Ursula Corbero as The Baroness in Snake Eyes.

The Baroness was iconic for becoming the first character to crossover from Marvel Comics into the animated show. How familiar were you with her past and her journey prior to this project?

Úrsula Corberó: I wasn't familiar at all with the G.I. Joe movement, but now I know that this is a huge thing. I think, in a way, that helped me to avoid this pressure. So, I was just enjoying it. It was all about feeling her power, and it was all about being chill and evil.

What sort of connection does The Baroness set up to G.I. Joe and Cobra in the film?

Úrsula Corberó: She's Cobra's leader. Cobra is an international criminal organization bent on world domination, terrorism, and these kinds of things. And, of course, Cobra is the Nemesis of the Joes. They are both very powerful. So... War.

What connection does the Baroness have to Snake Eyes himself in this film?

Úrsula Corberó: I don't want to do any spoilers, but I can [say] is that she's going to cause trouble for Snake Eyes, using Tokyo to get what she wants.
