Eagerly awaited set photos from Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood have emerged, showing a portion of Hollywood Blvd with a late 1960s makeover. Currently in production and due out next summer, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Tarantino’s ninth feature film, and the first since The Hateful Eight in 2015.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood takes place during the hippie heyday of Los Angeles in 1969. Faded TV western star Rick Dalton, played by Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, is struggling to remain relevant in Hollywood, alongside his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. While neither man seems to know what it takes to make it in Hollywood anymore, Dalton happens to have a very famous next-door neighbor – actress Sharon Tate, who will be played by Margot Robbie. While it was initially reported that the film would focus on Tate and the infamous Manson Family murders, Tarantino has since revealed that the Helter Skelter reign of terror will provide more of a backdrop to an overview of the era than be a focal point of the story.

Now, thanks to set photos from JoBlo, fans are able to take a closer look at the 1960s environment Tarantino is building. Most of the photos show storefronts along Hollywood Blvd, featuring retro signage and product packaging, while a few provide a glimpse of extras in era attire. One such sign advertises a hamburger for $0.25, while another for the adults-only Pussycat Theatre promises Babette and The Turn On! in startling color. While none of JoBlo's exclusive photos offer a look at the main cast, their report also includes some photos posted by the Quentin Tarantino Fan Club Twitter account that include Pitt and DiCaprio together on set.

Quentin Tarantino pops his collar

The subject matter of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has proven controversial in the media, with some – including Tate’s sister, until recently – objecting to potential exploitation of the tragedy in which the actress and four others lost their lives. The event gained national and international notoriety, and next year marks the 50th anniversary. Starring in the film alongside DiCaprio, Pitt, and Robbie is a who’s who of Hollywood A-listers, including Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Timothy Olyphant, James Marsden, Tim Roth, Damian Lewis, and many more. One name notably missing from the cast list, however, is frequent Tarantino collaborator Samuel L. Jackson, although Jackson has said his absence is due to his Marvel Studios commitments.

Controversy, by its very nature, draws attention, and in this case also attracts talent. Tarantino’s films are usually packed with a cast of established actors, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood appears to have taken this approach to a whole new level, promising what’s sure to be a masterclass in acting.
