As it's been 11 years since the last No More Heroes, players might find themselves a bit lost when picking up the latest entry to the series, particularly about upgrading Travis' skills. No More Heroes 3 is unconventional, and because of this, certain mechanics might not be obvious to both newer players and old fans alike. To try new moves in No More Heroes 3's hack-and-slash combat, players will need to make sure they pay attention to upgrading.

Before deciding to upgrade Travis, players must meet two requirements. First, they will need enough WESN (World’s End Super Nova), a special upgrade currency players can acquire by exploring the open-world regions of the game or by completing challenges that range from engaging in combat to turning in collectible items to mini-games like mowing the lawn. This currency is separate from UC (Utopia Coins), which mimics real-life currency.

The second requirement for upgrading Travis' skills in No More Heroes 3 is finding Dr. Naomi’s Laboratory. Players must simply leave the motel where Travis lives in Santa Destroy and find the Burger Suplex building. They will need to use the staircase leading down into the Laboratory. Alternatively, the fireman’s pole in Travis’s house can also be used to access it.

Use the Power-Up Arcade Machine to Upgrade Skills in No More Heroes 3

The Power Up Arcade Machine in No More Heroes 3 takes WESN as currency

Once inside the Lab, upgrades can be obtained from the Power-Up Arcade Machine found near the big tree in the center of the room. Players can spend WESN to upgrade Travis’ attack, health, and power stats, improve his Death Skill cooldown time, or pick up new special moves and skills. Additionally, this machine can also be used to charge Travis’s beam katana, a type of sword that is a staple of the No More Heroes series.

The Power-Up Arcade Machine offers 10 levels of Health and Attack upgrades, six levels of Power Gauge upgrades, two levels of Death Skill cooldown time reduction, and five special moves. The costs of these upgrades are cumulative, which means that upgrading the Power Gauge to level three, for example, requires a total of 2,000 WESN if the power level is one, but only 1,500 WESN if the power level is two. To upgrade, players can simply hold down A until the WESN meter reaches the required amount.

Upgrading Travis can be very worthwhile, as most of these upgrades can provide a more complex and rewarding experience in combat. Players intimidated by the question of what to upgrade first might find it helpful to know that all upgrades can be reset and all WESN refunded in exchange for a modest UC fee. This can allow players to upgrade Travis worry-free in what will most likely be that last No More Heroes game.
