Netflix's reboot of the long-running documentary series Unsolved Mysteries has been a hit for the streaming service, and no doubt Volume 3 is already highly-anticipated. Unsolved Mysteries first premiered in 1987, and ran regularly in the mid-2000s. Netflix picked up the series for a reboot in 2019, and the first intallment, season 1, dropped on July 1, 2020. The second half of the season, "Volume 2" is now available. Based on the available information, when can viewers expect part 3?
Netflix released Unsolved Mysteries Volume 2 on October 19, 2020. Like Volume 1, this second collection contained 6 episodes, each under an hour in length and focusing on one core mystery. Both volumes focus on unsolved true crime stories, but do include a paranormal-based entry; the first collection contained the episode "Berkshires UFO," while Volume 2 featured the ghost-centric (appropriate for October, a.k.a. "Spooky Season") episode "Tsunami Spirits."
Both Unsolved Mysteries Volumes 1 and 2 skyrocketed to the top of Netflix's streaming charts following their release, and Volume 1 in particular took the internet by storm as curious viewers tried to answer the compelling questions posed by the show — like the meaning behind Rey Rivera's note. Unsolved Mysteries Season 2 (Volume 3) Renewal Status
Netflix has yet to renew Unsolved Mysteries for another season, but given how successful the series has been, fans can rest assured that the streaming service will likely make such an announcement in the near future. It appears the show's production team wants to continue with the series; Unsolved Mysteries co-creator and producer Terry Dunn Meurer told Newsweek, “We have some really great stories that we feel are strong stories. So, we are ready to tackle that.”
Unsolved Mysteries Season 2 (Volume 3) Release Date
The next installment of Unsolved Mysteries has not been order yet, which makes it difficult to predict when season 2 (Volume 3) could be released. The first season of the true crime documentary series premiered in July, and the season was split into two parts. Given that production hasn't begun on new episodes — not to mention the fact the wide-spread delays in the industry due to COVID-19 — a conservative guess would be a release date of July 2021 at the earliest, but could even be as late as fall 2021.
While July does seem a ways off, fans of the series can take comfort in the news that Netflix will be producing a podcast in the interim. On October 21, 2020, Deadline reported that the company behind Unsolved Mysteries, Cosgrove/Meurer Productions, is collaborating with Cadence13 to produce a true-crime podcast series.
Unsolved Mysteries Season 2 (Volume 3) Stories
Staying faithful to the original version of Unsolved Mysteries, which was hosted by Robert Stack, the Netflix reboot features a combination of true crime stories as well as paranormal unexplained phenomena. The first collection of episodes featured three murders, a possible suicide, one missing person's case, and an alien abductions story. The second collection featured one murder, two possible suicides, a missing fugitive, two missing children, and a story of ghost sightings. Based on the established pattern, fans can expect Unsolved Mysteries Volume 3 to contain a mix of clear murders, possible suicides, and missing persons cases, along with at least one paranormal story.
