Destiny 2 has been celebrating many events lately between Bungie's 30th Anniversary and the Dawning annual event, and players can now access Thorn-inspired armor sets in the new Grasp of Avarice dungeon. Thorn is an Exotic Hand Cannon that was originally introduced in Destiny 1 and made its debut appearance alongside the Forsaken Expansion. Though Thorn could originally be obtained via the "A Light In The Dark" Exotic quest, it has since been retired to the Exotic Archive in Destiny 2.

Only players who have purchased the 30th Anniversary pack in Destiny 2 can acquire the Thorn-inspired armor. The Thorn-inspired armor is the Descending Echo gear set that, like the weapon itself, is designed with a sleek and shiny appearance that embodies the same design tone as the Weapons of Sorrow. There is a Descending Echo gear set for each Guardian class, and each set includes a helmet, arms, chest, legs, and class item.

Each Descending Echo gear piece is earned from specific encounters within the Destiny 2 Grasp of Avarice dungeon. Fortunately, unlike other dungeons, the Grasp of Avarice was quickly fixed from its debut and now allows players to complete the dungeon multiple times in order to earn rewards upon each successful encounter. Other Grasp of Avarice rewards include the Destiny 2 Eyasluna Hand Cannon, another fan-favorite weapon returning from Destiny 1 with the 30th Anniversary pack. Players do not have to wait for the weekly reset in Destiny 2 to play through the dungeon and earn more gear, regardless of their Guardian class.

Destiny 2: Thorn Armor Drops & Encounters

Destiny 2 Gjallarhorn Rocket Launcher & Guardians

There are three encounters and two secret chests from which players can earn the Thorn armor in Destiny 2, though each piece of gear will have to compete with some of the new weapons as well. Each reward is randomly generated per encounter, and, with luck, players will earn all gear pieces before long.

These are the Grasp of Avarice encounters in Destiny 2, and what they drop:

  • Phry'Zhia The Insatiable: Boots, Class Item, Matador 64 Shotgun, another returning Destiny weapon
  • Fallen Shield: Gauntlets, Chest, Hero of Ages Sword
  • Captain Avarokk The Covetous (Two Rewards): Head, Chest, Legs, Class Item, Eyasluna Hand Cannon, 1000-Yard Stare Sniper Rifle

Players will first need to unlock each of these items before they can be earned from secret chests, as the chests will not unlock new items. The first secret chest is located in the large room in which players need to gain access to the Scorch Cannon to raise the gate. Guardians should walk between the third and fourth sections onto the steel beam, follow it to the end, then turn around to find the chest on a platform above. The second chest is located inside the giant skull's right eye socket. In addition to the Thorn armor set pieces, these chests can also award the dungeon's Destiny 2 weapons, like the 1000-Yard Stare and its god rolls.
