Phasmophobia has players taking on the role of paranormal investigators as they enter and explore a haunted location. Their goal is to identify the type of ghost residing in the location and to complete a variety of other side objectives.

But one small hindrance players may experience when exploring a location are locked doors. These doors can lead to the house, the basement, or just a random locked room. But these locked doors exist, and they function as a barrier to entry for any wannabe ghost hunter. They can be especially frustrating when they block the player from accessing the main power supply. Thankfully, unlocking them tends to be fairly easy.

How to Open Locked Doors in Phasmophobia

A player comes face-to-face with a ghost's silhouette in Phasmophobia

The first locked door a player is likely to find is the front door that leads directly into the building. Think of opening this door as a mini-tutorial about how to open all other closed doors in the game. But opening this door is as simple as grabbing a key from the van and using it to enter the building. If players are having trouble finding this beginner’s key, then they should look by the van’s computer monitor.

Players should quickly notice that these keys do not take an inventory slot, so they don’t have to worry about dropping or forsaking any items when they come across one. It should also be noted that aside from the entry door and the occasional basement, there are not really all that many locked doors in the game to begin with.

Still, when the player in need of a key, all they need to do is explore the map for a while. Aside from the one in the van, keys tend to be scattered around the map. Almost as if they were randomly placed. They are not especially hidden or anything, but they are often found on counters, tables, and other flat surfaces. But it is not unheard of for keys to be found in bowls or table dishes, either.

But despite their relatively out-in-the-open position, the area’s darkness tends to make these keys a bit difficult to spot unless the player has some sort of light source on hand. The most important thing when finding a key is persistence. The more the player explores and looks around, the more likely they are to find the key. So check every common area, the ghost room, kitchen, bathroom, and whatever else the building has to offer. Once the key is found, then all the player has to do is interact with the locked door again. Then it will function just like any other door.

But it is important to note that physical locks are not the only reason a door may remain closed. The ghost can also shut and lock doors depending on its mood, so it is important for the player to consider supernatural phenomena when they encounter a locked door. This is especially true for doors the player has already interacted with. The front door in particular stands out because the ghosts always locks it when it enters its hunting phase.
