Players can unlock the Blue Pikmin variant within Pikmin Bloom. With the Pikmin series, players are able to collect a wide variety of different kinds of Pikmin. Each form comes along with its own ability that makes it stand out. For example, players start their adventures in Pikmin Bloom with Red Pikmin, a species that is known to be immune to fire attacks. As players continue to level up, they will earn access to different seedling types. Players can then plant these and walk a specific number of steps to grow them into a Pikmin. Before players can grow Blue Pikmin, they will need to unlock the seedling first.

In the Pikmin series, Blue Pikmin are able to swim underwater without drowning. This was essential in getting Blue Pikmin in Pikmin 3 Deluxe when certain treasure items were hidden deep within rivers or lakes. All Pikmin types in Pikmin Bloom are unlocked through the same method, and players will need to continue leveling up to access Blue Pikmin.
