If Sylvester Stallone's tribute to '80s action movies with his movie The Expendables wasn't enough for you, then you absolutely must watch this trailer for Universal Soldier: Regeneration.
Yes, you read that right. Jean-Claude Van Damme may have turned down a role to play along with Stallone and friends and his star-studded action fest, but he and Dolph Lundgren still get to party in this third installment to their Universal Soldier franchise. I say "their" because there were two made-for-TV sequels to the first Universal Soldier that starred Matt Battaglia as the title character (making this the fifth Universal Soldier film).
Check out the trailer after the jump.
The last time we got treated to JCVD suiting up as Luc Deveraux was a decade ago in 1999's Universal Soldier: The Return and although this movie is ridiculous - they're threatening to blow up Chernobyl - I was smiling while watching the trailer.
But it doesn't matter. The folks behind this flick know their audience and they aren't trying to make a run for the award ceremonies or critical praise. For that reason, this film succeeds in its goal of classic 80s style dialogue and action, and I'm not ashamed to say that I'll be watching this when it comes out. If you noticed the beginning of the video, it's rated R, something that Stallone's next flick may not be which is a downside to quite a few fans of the genre.
Here's the plot synopsis if it matters to you:
With stolen top-secret technology, terrorists have created a next-generation Universal Soldier - an elite fighter genetically altered into a programmable killing machine. With this "UniSol" (Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski) leading the way, they seize the crippled Chernobyl nuclear reactor, threatening to unleash a lethal radioactive cloud. The only one who can stop them is Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a UniSol who's been decommissioned for years. Reactivated and retrained, Deveraux must make a full-out assault on the heavily armed fortress. But inside, he'll discover not one but two of these virtually indestructible warriors. Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren), Deveraux's vicious UniSol enemy from the original Universal Soldier, has been secretly reanimated and upgraded. Now, these elite fighters are locked, loaded and programmed to kill; and the fate of millions hinges on this high-action showdown.
"Locked, loaded and programmed to kill." What do you think of JCVD in this latest Universal Soldier?
Universal Soldier: Regeneration is directed by John Hyams and stars Dolph Lundgren, Andrei Arlovski, Corey Johnson and Zahary Baharov alongside the star, the legend, Jean-Claude Van Damme. It is going straight to home video.
