SR Pick [Video]: The United Monster Talent Agency Short Film Entertains

AMC's short film The United Monster Talent Agency directed by The Walking Dead's Greg Nicotero

Every Halloween I feel the need to pull out my classic creature films and watch at least two a week leading up to October 31st. The Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula and Creature from the Black Lagoon are just a few of the films I watch each year.

Classic film buffs will recognize names like Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., Max Schreck and Bela Lugosi as the men behind the classic creatures of horror - but what if those creatures weren’t played by actors but rather by the creatures themselves? How would a director or studio go about hiring one of these classic horror movie icons?

AMC has teamed up with The Walking Dead’s special FX make-up designer Greg Nicotero to bring us the short film titled The United Monster Talent Agency as a way of explaining the process a Hollywood studio would go through hiring a classic movie monster.

The United Monster Talent Agency is presented in the old black and white style of a Movie Tone News reel with at least eighteen different monster appearances, one iconic horror prop, and cameos by Eli Roth (Hostel), Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), and Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead). With all these classic horror movie icons in one place, there is plenty to keep your eyes busy.

Nicotero deserves a lot of credit for making the seven minute film feel like a legitimate 1950s period piece. What I’m most impressed with is the way Nicotero properly recreates several scenes from the classic creature movies Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Wolf Man while managing to keep it from being cheesy.

Classic creature films shot before the 70s are far from scary but that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable and appropriate for Halloween. If you get a chance this year, I would highly recommend you seek out and watch these timeless films from the Golden Age of cinema– you’ll be happy that you did.
