Kate Beckinsale is back in tight leather for another round of supernatural battle. No, she hasn't joined the cast of Breaking Dawn - she's actually headlining the fourth installment of her own supernatural creature franchise, Underworld: Awakening.
Today we have the first trailer for Underworld 4, and it looks like more of the same that we've seen from the franchise, but thankfully lands more on the side of the first Underworld, rather than its lackluster sequel, Underworld: Evolution.
The story this time around acts as both a sequel and a semi-reboot: Selene (Beckinsale) awakens 12 years in the future after being held captive in stasis, only to find that the tables have turned on the world stage. Now, it is humans who are the hunters, while vampires and their enemies Lycans (werewolves) are the prey. As one of of the last of the now-legendary "death-dealers," Selene's return will shakeup this new world order. And of course, she needs to solve the mystery of what happened to her Lycan/Vamp hybrid lover, Michael.
Check out the trailer for Underworld: Awakening, which will literally be coming at us in 3D:
There is so much about this trailer that is familiar. People screaming "LYCANS!" Selene's supernatural acrobatics, the whole "You dishonored the covenant" plot point - not to mention the slow-mo turn and tossing of those death-dealer disks, which will almost certainly be exploited as an in-your-face 3D effect. That all said, the plot has been thankfully stripped-down from the convoluted mythos of Evolution: Selene has to learn all about this new world she's in, and we the audience will learn the new rules of the game along with her (hence that semi-reboot label).
Swedish directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein (Shelter) haven't exactly reinvented the wheel that was first spun by director Len Wiseman and Co., but they do seem to have found away to work in some fun new tricks (Selene breaking necks while jumping off a ledge = awesome). I've always been a fan of the series, so I'll be there for this new chapter as well. Never hurts to spend a few hours with a leather-clad Kate Beckinsale.
Are you looking forward to touring the new Underworld, or were the first three installments enough for you?
Underworld: Awakening will be in theaters on January 20, 2012.
