2012 is going to be a big year for movies, and it has the opportunity to kick off with a strong start if Underworld Awakening is up to par. The new chapter in the hit supernatural series has the benefit of having franchise star Kate Beckinsale back in black leather to once again portray vampire “death-dealer” Selene, as well as the lure(?) of a having been shot in 3D.
The only question is: does this new trailer promise the start of a good year, or is it an ill omen for movie fans?
Awakening will start a new chapter of the franchise, in which Selene (wait for it…) awakens from a 12-year cryogenic imprisonment, only to find the world is a very different place. Lycans (werewolves) and vampires have both become the prey of humanity, which wishes to eradicate both sides from existence. There is a young girl who could potentially turn the tide of the war, but it’s up to Selene to keep her alive and protected long enough to do so. Along the way, Selene kicks ass, takes names, and learns a few surprises about what’s transpired in the time she was gone.
Now that you know what you’re in for, check out the second trailer for Underworld Awakening:
Selene making graceful, impossible leaps? Check. Selene going kung-fu on a group of unfortunate opponents? Check. Selene blazing her guns and occasionally using them as drawing tools? Check. Selene tossing blades around like a circus performer? Check. Gimmicky pop-out-at-you 3D shots? But of course.
Seems like we’re getting classic Underworld in the third dimension.
To their credit, Swedish TV-turned-film directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein have done a pretty admirable job creating a new-but-familiar world of Underworld to play in. It’s hard to look at the footage in this trailer and say that the film looks poorly shot, low-budget, or amateurish. It’s pretty slick, polished, and in general, well choreographed. In short: it looks like a pretty solid slice of genre entertainment. Fans of the franchise will probably be happy that it looks better and more focused than Undeworld: Evolution was, and more thrilling than Rise of the Lycans was. If you’ve never been onboard with this series, best to move along.
As stated Underworld Awakening will help get the year started when it hits theaters on January 20, 2012.
