Be advised, major plot spoilers for Underwater are included below.

The new aquatic creature feature Underwater is now in theaters, and here's a guide to the cast of characters and the actors playing them. Water is essential to human life, for multiple reasons. We also love to swim and play in it, whether that be in a pool, a lake, the ocean, or another body of water. However, at least in water we can't see to the bottom of, there's always a small worry that something else might be down there, some kind of creature waiting to make an unsuspecting person their prey.

This has made the water a great setting for horror films over the years, both above and below the surface. Killer sharks, rampaging alligators, and even unexplained life forms have taken turns chowing down on big screen victims, and the appetite for such stories never really seems to wane. The latest water-based monster movie to arrive is Underwater, directed by William Eubank, and set at a deep sea oil drilling station at the bottom of the ocean.

The further one ventures downward into the ocean, the less recognizable both the landscape and its inhabitants become. This definitely proves true for Underwater, which sees multiple terrifying creatures attack the survivors of a major disaster that threatens to destroy the entire rig and everyone living on it. Underwater's cast is small, and its setting claustrophobic, but here's a look at who plays who, and their roles in the story.

Underwater Cast & Character Guide

Underwater - Cast and Character Guide

Kristen Stewart as Norah Price: Underwater's main protagonist, most of the film is seen primarily through Norah's point of view. It's likely if she hadn't happened to be up brushing her teeth when the station started to collapse inward, nobody would've made it out of the film alive. Norah is a mechanical engineer, and ultimately chooses to sacrifice her own life to save Smith and Emily from the giant Cthulhu-esque monster's wrath. Stewart is best known for playing Bella in the Twilight films, and also recently starred in the Charlie's Angels reboot.

Vincent Cassel as Captain Lucien: Lucien is initially found looking ready to go down with his ship, having chosen to stay behind while other crew members took escape pods. Norah questions this decision, since he has a daughter, but it's revealed later that she actually died young, explaining Lucien's almost father-daughter attachment to Norah. Lucien's persistence gets his surviving crew most of the way to safety at Roebuck Station, but he's killed due to being dragged to the surface too fast by one of the creatures. Much of Cassel's work has been in his native France, but he appeared in Black Swan and will join the Westworld cast in season 3.

Jessica Henwick as Emily Haversham: Emily repeatedly doubts her ability to survive the disaster as it unfolds, making it all the more satisfying that he survives the film. She's quite in love with Smith, who she manages to keep alive by dragging him along the ocean floor as he suffers from a lack of oxygen in his suit. Henwick is best known for playing Colleen Wing in Iron Fist and The Defenders, and also appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

John Gallagher Jr. as Liam Smith: Smith, as mentioned, is Emily's significant other, and works with her in the rig's control room. He sustains damage to his suit in an attack, and at several points come close to dying due to lack of oxygen. Nevertheless, he survives Underwater alongside Emily, as the two leave in escape pods, and are subsequently rescued. Gallagher was a regular on The Newroom, and also starred in 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Mamoudou Athie as Rodrigo Nagenda: The first to die of the six initial survivors of Underwater's rig disaster, Rodrigo helps Norah get through the initial journey to where the Captain is, with the duo rescuing Paul along the way. Rodrigo ends up making a selfless sacrifice, seemingly choosing to wear a helmet he knew was damaged and couldn't handle the immense pressure of walking on the ocean floor, in order to allow the others to use intact ones. Athie recently appeared in the political thriller The Front Runner, and alongside Brie Larson in Unicorn Store.

T.J. Miller as Paul Abel: Paul is the comic relief of the group in Underwater, constantly cracking wise. He also clearly cares about the others though, and ends up dying horribly, being ripped from his suit by an attacking monster. His most prized possession is a stuffed bunny, for reasons unclear. Miller is well-known for playing Weasel in Deadpool, and starring on HBO's Silicon Valley.
