Toby Fox’s Undertale was released for Microsoft Windows and OS X in 2015 before later being ported to Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and even the Nintendo Switch. The game has received critical acclaim for everything from its impressive music to imaginative story and intriguing characters. Needless to say, there has been much curiosity over if and when a sequel to Undertale may grace gamers’ consoles, but for now, nothing has been set in stone.

The role-playing game was published and developed by Toby Fox, and since the indie developer hasn’t addressed the possibility of a sequel, it means the door is still technically open. But the developer has implied that he never expected the success of Undertale and would’ve preferred if the game stayed more niche than mainstream.

In 2016, Fox described having mixed emotions to the success of Undertale. According to RockPaperShotgun, he said “At the height of its popularity, ‘not liking the game’ felt like a cardinal sin to many fans online. In reaction to these circumstances, others began actively hate the game, creating an endless whirlwind of discourse,” he explained, adding, “At times, I wished I had a way to quell the attention. I felt a strange powerlessness. (And guilt, for feeling stressed when the success of the game SHOULD be something I’m nothing but ecstatic about.)” Given the developer’s comments and the fact that Undertale’s story feels like it was tied up neatly in a standalone game, it’s unsurprising there’s no real word on a sequel. And, as it stands, now that it’s been five years since the game’s initial release, the possibility of an Undertale 2 given everything seems slim. Then again, fans of the game were shocked in 2018 when Deltarune debuted, seemingly giving a glimmer of hope to the potential Undertale franchise. While it didn’t provide anything official in terms of Undertale 2, it certainly didn’t close off hope of a future sequel, spiritual or otherwise.

Was Deltarune Hinting At An Undertale 2?

Undertale Video Game

In October 2018, the first chapter of Deltarune was released by Toby Fox – his first game since Undertale. Fox instructed fans to check out Undertale’s official Twitter page for updates ahead of the game’s release. This, coupled by the fact that Deltarune’s name is an anagram for Undertale and the visual and play similarities, many gamers initially thought Deltarune’s release was meant to be a teaser for a new Undertale game. Some media outlets at the time were even reporting that the game was setting the stage for (or at least hinting at) a proper sequel.

But alas, it was soon confirmed that Deltarune is set in a completely different universe than Undertale. Toby Fox himself set the record straight. “Deltarune’s world is a different one [than Undertale’s],” Fox explained in a TwitLong post. “With different characters, that have lived different lives. A whole new story will happen.” While he implied that the game is targeted towards fans of Undertale, it’s still a wholly separate game, “I don’t know what you call this kind of game [...] It’s just a game you can play after you complete Undertale, if you want to.” It was also revealed that Deltarune was in development long before Undertale released.

Unfortunately, despite how it seemed initially, Deltarune was not meant to tease at a possible Undertale sequel. And as it stands, it’s anyone’s best guess whether an Undertale sequel will actually happen or not.
