In the Netflix film Uncorked by writer director Pentrice Penny, the protagonist compares hip-hop artists Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Drake to different types of wine. Penny, the acclaimed writer/producer of Happy Endings and HBO's Insecure, weaves a cross-cultural narrative in Uncorked, as he juxtaposes his protagonist's lifestyle with the effete world of wine connoisseurs, and the comparison of wine and famed hip-hop artists is just one element of Uncorked's clash-of-cultures narrative.

In Uncorked, Elijah (Mamoudou Athie) is determined to become a sommelier, but his father, Louis (Courtney B. Vance), is the owner of the family Bar-B-Que restaurant, and he wishes for Elijah to take over the business, just as he did with his father. Louis doesn't understand Elijah's infatuation with wine and believes that Elijah is simply going through another phase in his young adult life. In order to communicate his love for wine to his friends, family, and eventual love interest, Tonya (Sasha Compère), Elijah attempts to bridge the cultural divide with pop culture references, like comparing wine to hip-hop artists.

In the film, Elijah compares three famous rappers to different types of wine. Chardonnay is rapper and businessman Jay-Z, Kanye West is pinot grigio, and riesling resembles Drake. At first glance these comparisons may make audiences scratch their heads, but paralleling these rappers to these specific wines makes sense.

The Wine-to-Hip-Hop Comparisons Explained

Jay-Z is one of the oldest relevant rappers, and with his experience working on the score for The Great Gatsbythis isn't the first time his music has been blended with the more stylish things in life. In Uncorked, Elijah explains that chardonnay is versatile yet smooth, can go with anything, and is the "granddaddy of wine." These characteristics sound just like what Jay-Z is to hip-hop music today. Jay-Z's first album "Reasonable Doubt" debuted in 1996, and his most recent album "4:44" dropped in 2017, so his music has literally spanned three decades. Jay-Z also has been featured on dozens of other songs and albums, so he does "go with anything" as well.

Elijah compares rapper Kanye West to pinot grigio. Pinot grigio is a white wine that has a little bit of spice to it, and as Elijah puts it, "You thought I was just a white wine. I'm about to get stupid!" Though West may seem like a mild-mannered artist, he often has radical ideas embedded in his music and public persona. His unapologetic support for President Trump and his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift lend credence to the idea that he is spicier than he appears at first glance.

The last comparison Elijah makes is riesling to hip hop/R&B artist Drake. For the past few years, Drake has a different connotation than he did ten years ago. Most people now consider Drake's newer music to be "soft" and "sweet." Elijah describes riesling as crisp and clean, but also with a sweet taste, and he says that riesling wine is "in its feelings," obviously referring to the popular Drake song "In My Feelings."

Pentrice Penny's writing in Uncorked brilliantly juxtaposes two completely different arts, hip-hop and wine-making, in a comparison that holds up to scrutiny. Just as the characters of the film bridge cultural divides - an African American Bar-B-Que worker moving to France to study wine - so does Penny's comparison of the worlds of hip-hop and wine.
