Playstation Productions' first release, Uncharted, has two post-credits scenes, both of which set up plot points and characters that could be explored in future sequels. Like most other comic book and video game adaptations nowadays, Sony's Uncharted features two clips after the film's conclusion. The first post-credits scene comes straight after the title sequence, and the second follows the animated credits. The Gage Uncharted post-credit scene drops the most significant hints about what lies ahead in a sequel.
Uncharted is the first live-action adaptation of the beloved game series of the same name. The film is not canon to the games and follows an original story revolving around a sunken treasure that takes heavy inspiration from Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Tom Holland plays Nathan Drake, the film's protagonist, with Mark Wahlberg playing Victor Sullivan, or Sully, Drake's partner and fellow treasure hunter. Joining Holland and Wahlberg are Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, Antonio Banderas as Santiago Moncada, and Tati Gabrielle as Jo Braddock.
Rather than tying up loose plot threads, the Gage Uncharted post-credits sequences introduce the character and tease new adventures that could play a central role in the yet-to-be-confirmed Uncharted 2. The first post-credits scene, which immediately follows the last main scene of the film, takes place in a prison cell occupied by a mysterious figure. The second stinger sets up a potential sequel by signposting which adventure Drake will go on next, as well as surprisingly introducing a new antagonist not present in the games.
How Sam Is Alive After Uncharted's Ending & Where He Is
The first of the Gage Uncharted post-credits scenes reveals that Nate's brother, Sam Drake (Rudy Pankow), is still alive after Sully told Nate that he was killed by Braddock before the film's events. Sam is seen sitting in a prison cell, writing a postcard to Nate advising him to watch his back. Sam's postcards play a big role in helping Nate uncover Moncada's lost treasure in the main film, however, it seems that someone is blocking Sam's more recent postcards from reaching their intended recipient.
It is still unclear how Sam survived the altercation with Braddock, but his entire arc seems to be lifted directly from Uncharted 4. In the fourth game, Nate, Sam, and a character named Rafe Adler get themselves intentionally locked up in Panamanian prison to find a cross that could lead them to a buried treasure. After acquiring said cross, the group attempts a prison breakout where Nathan's brother Sam gets shot and is presumed dead, and the other two are forced to leave him behind. Uncharted 4 reveals that Sam never died and that he was treated for his wounds and put back in custody. If the film is following the source material, that means Sam is currently locked up in Panama, after surviving a gunshot wound as he did in the games.
There is another clue in the Gage Uncharted post-credits scene that confirms the Panamanian setting. Before the camera pans to focus on Sam, it lingers for a second on the occupant of Sam's neighboring cell. The mysterious character looked very similar to Hector Alcázar. Alcázar was a Panamanian drug lord known for his ruthlessness. In the fourth game, Sam tells Nate that Alcázar helped him escape from prison when in reality the two never actually met. The second Tom Holland-led Uncharted movie could loosely adapt this storyline by actually having Sam form an alliance with Alcázar to escape prison.
Who Is Uncharted's New Villain, Pilou Asbaek's Gage?
The second post-credits scene follows Holland's Nate as he attempts to strike a deal with a mysterious new character played by Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbaek. The deal involved Nate giving up his famous ring in exchange for a WWII Nazi map until Aesbek's character double-crosses Nate and tries to keep both. Asbaek's character is revealed to be Gage. While Gage is an entirely original character, he mentions that he works for a man named Roman, which is a nod to the very first Uncharted game.
The first entry in the game series, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, followed Nate and Sully as they attempted to locate Sir Francis Drake's coffin, which would lead them to the famous lost city of El Dorado. As with most Uncharted games, Drake's goal was to find the lost city before other parties, and in the case of Drake's Fortune, the second interested party was Gabriel Roman. Roman was a British crime lord with an interest in valuable antiques and lost treasures. He serves as one of the main antagonists in Drake's Fortune and could make an appearance in the film's sequel.
What Games Uncharted's After Credits Set Up
The Nazi Map, coupled with the mention of Roman, strongly suggests that Uncharted 2 will be loosely based on the first game, Drake's Fortune. In Drake's Fortune, Nathan is initially looking for the coffin of Sir Francis Drake, which he finds empty except for Drake's diary. The diary leads Nate to believe that Sir Francis Drake found the lost city of El Dorado, which motivates him to follow in his footsteps. A globe-trotting adventure ensues, in which Nate learns that the Germans were looking for El Dorado during the Second World War, and also that he is not the only person interested in finding El Dorado.
Nate and Sully cross paths with Roman, who is revealed to be one of Sully's creditors as he is in debt, and learn that he is also looking for El Dorado after a tip from Sully. After Mark Wahlberg's Sully is assumed dead due to getting shot by Roman, Nate flees and attempts to find El Dorado on his own. He eventually does, only to discover that El Dorado is not a lost city of gold, rather, it's a golden statue that carries an evil curse that turns anyone who attempts to open it into a mindless beast. A large battle ensues where Roman dies, and Sully and Nate, along with Elena, escape the island with boxes full of gold. All the hints in the second post-credits scene indicate that Drake's Fortune will be the inspiration for the next Uncharted film, and it would be the perfect chance to introduce Elena's character, who ends up becoming Nate's love interest and wife in the games.
Why Sully's Mustache Is So Important In Uncharted 2
The last reveal of the second post-credits scene is Wahlberg's Sully finally growing his beloved mustache from the games. Sully's mustache, along with his cigar-smoking, his cursing, and quick wit, is one of his defining features. While fans of the games might have been disappointed by some of Sully's key characteristics being left on the cutting floor, the second post-credits scene goes a long way to rectify that. Sully barges in after Gage double-crosses Nate, and Nate immediately comments on his mustache before tossing him a cigar. This indicates that Uncharted 2 will feature a Sully that is more faithful to the source material, which is bound to please fans.
Uncharted's two post-credits scenes do a great job of continuing the story and setting up a potential sequel. As a franchise starter, a lot was riding on the first film's success. While critics were pretty harsh on the movie, that might not affect its box office success due to the popularity of both the games and the pulling power of the Uncharted movie cast involved. The two post-credits sequences indicate that the next film will be following the source material more closely, which is a great sign considering the great reception each of the Uncharted games received.
The Uncharted Post-Credits Set Up A Sequel, But Is Uncharted 2 Happening?
After Tom Holland brought Nathan Drake to life on the big screen, the bombastic nature of the big-budget movie left people wondering if there was a sequel in the works. While nothing has been officially announced by Sony, it's safe to assume that Uncharted 2 will almost definitely be made. Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer has already stated that he has tons of ideas ready to go for a sequel. Coupled with that, Sony has publicly stated that the movie is the start of a franchise, meaning there could be plenty more on the way. The budget for the first movie was $120 million, and the film didn't make that back on its opening weekend. However, Uncharted did eventually make its money back, as the movie grossed $401.7 million worldwide.
In addition, Uncharted's Rotten Tomatoes scores couldn't be more different. While being certified rotten amongst critics (40%), the audience score sits at a 90%, proving that though critics gave mixed reviews, audiences loved the film. Despite not being well-received on all fronts, the audience score could be reason enough to warrant a sequel – they're the ones spending the money, after all. Plus, Tom Holland has become a very popular name in the average household, meaning Sony might bank on the star to carry the franchise forward. Holland is taking a bit of a break right now, but that doesn't mean he couldn't come back for Uncharted 2.
Since nothing has been confirmed for Uncharted 2, there's not yet a release date or plot details available. The only storyline details that can be ascertained come from the Uncharted post-credit scene, which introduces Gage. The sequel will probably follow the events of the first game, given the character clues left behind. People will have to wait and see what comes up when news of Uncharted 2 finally drops.
