Warning: This post contains spoilers for Uncharted.

Sony's Uncharted briefly referenced Nathan Drake's (Tom Holland) connection to Francis Drake in the film, which could indicate which storyline from the games Uncharted 2 could adapt. The first few minutes of Uncharted include a flashback sequence that gives audiences some insight into Nate and Sam's (Rudy Pankow) relationship. In that scene, Sam mentions that he and Nate are descendants of the great explorer Francis Drake.

Sir Francis Drake is a real-life historical figure who served as a British explorer in the Elizabethan Age. He is best known for circumnavigating the entire globe in one expedition between the years 1577 and 1580. Due to Drake bringing back plenty of treasure from his worldwide trip, some historians believe that he stumbled upon vast fortunes during his travels, which is what inspired the first Uncharted game. However, Francis Drake famously abstained from having any children, which sheds some doubt on Nathan Drake's lineage.

In reality, Nathan and Sam are not heirs of the great explorer, they actually adopted the surname Drake themselves. The fourth entry in the Uncharted video game seriesUncharted 4: A Thief's End, revealed the tragic truth about Drake's true lineage in a scene very similar to the flashback in the film. Rather than being descendants of Drake, the two brothers adopted the name after finding their mother's research on the historical figure that attempted to prove that he did indeed have children.

Nathan Drake's Ring Uncharted

The first three games in the Uncharted franchise placed a great deal of emphasis on Nathan's connection to Francis Drake; however, there were clues, especially in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, that hinted towards Drake's connection to the explorer being made up. The fourth Uncharted video game established that Nathan and Sam originally had the surname Morgan before they adopted the surname Drake. This choice was made as they decided to leave their lives at the orphanage behind to pursue a life of adventure. This arguably makes the Drake surname more meaningful to Nate and Sam.

The Uncharted movie bringing up Nate's link to Francis Drake, albeit briefly, hints at the storyline of the potential sequel. Nate's alleged link to Sir Francis, and specifically his famous ring, lead him to discover the empty coffin of the British explorer in Drake's Fortune, which became the main catalyst for the events of the first game. Moreover, the Uncharted movie's second post-credits scene included some subtle Easter eggs that back the theory of a sequel being based on the first game. The Nazi map mentioned in the post-credits stinger is a direct reference to Drake's Fortune, and Roman, Gage's boss, is a reference to the main antagonist of the first game, Gabriel Roman.

Given that the first Uncharted film followed an original story, it would be an interesting creative shift for Uncharted 2 to adapt one of the games directly. The most likely scenario is a new adventure that is heavily inspired by Drake's Fortune, the same way the first film leaned heavily on Uncharted 4's story. While Uncharted did not open to the best reviews, the popularity of both the source material and the cast involved almost guarantee a sequel, one that will hopefully be better received by critics and fans alike.
