Update: Read our full Uncharted movie trailer breakdown!

The first Uncharted movie trailer is officially released. A film adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game series has been in development for well over a decade, having gone through multiple directors and encountering numerous release date delays. Even when the pieces finally came into place with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg starring as the iconic duo Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan, Uncharted was hit with setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the movie is fast approaching its long-awaited premiere.

With Uncharted set for release in February 2022, Sony has been doing their part to build buzz and anticipation. Last year, audiences got their first look at Holland as Nathan Drake, and back in August, Uncharted footage was unveiled at CinemaCon. Since then, viewers have been waiting to get a glimpse at what director Ruben Fleischer has in store. Following reports the first Uncharted trailer was coming this week, the preview is now online.

The Uncharted games were very much inspired by Indiana Jones, which made them fit for the big screen treatment. Based on the trailer, the Uncharted movie seems to have captured the fun action-adventure vibe players are familiar with, sending Nate and Sully on a wild quest for lost treasure. Holland, of course, is best known for the boyish enthusiasm of his Peter Parker in the MCU, which makes him an interesting choice for Drake. It'll be fascinating to see his full performance in the final movie, but the early returns in the trailer are promising enough. A veteran of big-budget blockbusters, Holland is more than capable of handling Uncharted's action sequences, and he has a couple of quips to showcase Nate's sense of humor. Another big takeaway is how game-accurate some of the set pieces are, like the ending plane scene that recalls Uncharted 3.

Additional story details are also revealed in the trailer, most notably a mystery surrounding Nate's brother, Sam disappearing. That seems to be the emotional core of the movie, as uncovering the treasure will help Nate find Sam. What's curious is Uncharted is hiding Sam in marketing materials for now, suggesting there could be some kind of twist or surprise involving the character. It'll be interesting to see if this is a running theme throughout the promotional campaign, or if future materials shed additional light on Sam's role (and who's playing him). Regardless, Uncharted looks to be an entertaining action film for early next year, so ideally it will be one of the rare successful video game adaptations.
