Tom Holland's Uncharted movie has officially been delayed to 2022. Sony has been trying to turn the popular video game franchise into a movie for years, but it wasn't until they selected Holland to play a young Nathan Drake that it made real progress. Uncharted features Mark Wahlberg as Drake's mentor Sully and is described as an original story instead of a straight adaptation of the games.

The progress on Uncharted led Sony to originally give the film a Christmas 2020 release date, but that was before Venom's Ruben Fleischer was brought on to direct. Fleischer replacing Bumblebee's Travis Knight resulted in a slight delay to March 2021, but that date was later put in jeopardy due to the coronavirus pandemic. Sony made the decision to push Uncharted to October 2021 but then started to reverse course by moving it up to July 2021. Unfortunately, that optimistic earlier release is no longer an option.

Sony continues to shake up its 2021 release calendar due to the lasting impacts of COVID-19 and announced today that Uncharted has been delayed again. The movie will no longer come out on July 16, 2021, and is instead scheduled to hit theaters on February 11, 2022.

This delay for Uncharted comes as part of a larger move by Sony to delay all of its movies with release dates in the first half of 2021. They previously announced a delay for Morbius to October 2021, and this latest announcement brought a delay for Ghostbusters: Afterlife as well. The reason for Uncharted's delay is due to Sony figuring out where to put its other delayed films. The Kay Cannon directed Cinderella movie starring singer Camila Cabello took Uncharted's July 2021 release date instead of coming out in February. Uncharted's release is now much farther away as a result, but it also gives Sony a short turn around on Holland blockbusters with Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 still slated for a December 2021 release.

Not only do fans now have to wait longer for Uncharted's release, but this delay also means that the marketing campaign could be months away from starting. There was some hope that Sony would release a trailer in early 2020 to get people excited for the summer blockbuster, but that is no longer the case. With Uncharted's new February 2022 release, Sony might not release any footage for the film until after the movie was previously scheduled to be out. While there is some skepticism about whether or not Uncharted will be the live-action version of the games fans have been waiting for, we'll now have to wait more than a year to actually see if it delivers or not.
