A new Uncharted photo gives the first look at Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. The upcoming movie is based on the popular video game series, which features Nolan North as the hero. An adaptation has been in the works for a long time but has faced a host of problems. Several directors and writers have been attached over the years, with Ruben Fleischer now leading the film. It's currently set to release July 16, 2021 after being moved several times.

Uncharted will focus on a younger version of Nate than some expected, serving as a prequel to the story shown in the games. Holland will be joined by Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan, Nate's mentor and fellow fortune hunter. Though filming on Uncharted began earlier this year, it was halted just after it started due to the coronavirus pandemic. Luckily, production was able to begin again in July. As a result of the delay, Holland will move right into shooting on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, which comes out December 17, 2021.

Set photos have teased what Nate will look like in Uncharted, to the excitement of many. However, Holland released a first official look at himself in character earlier today. Check it out below:

Though Holland is putting his own spin on Nate, it's reassuring to see many of the character's trademarks will make their way to the big screen. In the photo, Holland has Nate's darker hair, as well as a wardrobe very similar to what's seen in the Uncharted games. The backdrop behind him would also fit right in there. All told, the first look photo should assuage some concerns fans have about the movie not being a faithful adaptation.

Of course, it's hard to glean too much about the Uncharted film from one photo. However, it suggests the movie version will at least maintain the spirit of the games and the character of Nathan Drake. It looks like the film values the sort of small details that mean a lot to those who love the games. More generally, it's exciting to finally see an official first look image from a movie many thought would never actually be made. Even if the adaptation isn't perfect, Nate and other beloved characters from the Uncharted games will finally appear on the big screen, which is thrilling in and of itself. This photo should make audiences even more excited for what's to come.
