Tom Holland’s Nathan Drake and Sophia Taylor Ali's Chloe Frazer explore an ancient cave in a new image from the upcoming Uncharted movie. Fresh off of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland will appear in Ruben Fleischer’s (VenomZombieland: Double Tap) long-awaited adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise on February 18 (U.S.). In addition to Holland and Taylor, the film will star Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, Antonio Banderas, and Tati Gabrielle.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise follows the wise-cracking Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who embarks on perilous journeys to find priceless artifacts ala Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft. The big-screen adaptation appears to incorporate elements from all four of the games, like Sam Drake and various set pieces. However, it will serve as a prequel to the flagship franchise and will focus on the early days of Holland’s fortune hunter alongside his mentor, Sully. Initially, fans of the games were less-than-thrilled about the casting of Holland as the typically much older and grizzled Drake. Many have long lobbied for Nathan Fillion to play Drake, especially after that Uncharted short that laid the perfect template for the eventual feature film. Still, Holland’s and Wahlberg’s involvement is what ultimately got the project off the ground, and fans are warming to many of its teases.

The first trailer for Uncharted dropped a couple of months ago and received mixed reactions from fans. The second trailer, which dropped a couple of weeks ago, much more resembled the swashbuckling vibe of Uncharted and even saw Sully sporting his signature mustache. Although, that was likely taken from the final scene in the movie. As marketing continues to ramp up, yesterday, the first clip from the film hit the web, showcasing a cargo plane sequence pulled straight from Uncharted 3—which is chock full of “oh crap” moments. From Drake’s catchphrase, wardrobe, and theme to ancient caves and pirate ships, the film looks to capture the essence of Uncharted.

Video game adaptations don’t have the greatest track record. However, despite the fandom’s gripes about casting, Holland, Wahlberg, and company deserve the benefit of the doubt—as long as the performances, story, pacing, and set pieces are there, Uncharted could prove a worthy addition to the IP. An origin story leaves room for more installments and makes Holland the face of yet another franchise outside of Spider-Man.
