Original Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North made a recent visit to the Uncharted movie set, and the pictures he shared give some clues to the film’s story. Tom Holland will be taking on the role of a young Nate in the movie, setting the story sometime before the first game's events. The cast also includes Mark Wahlberg as Sully, as well as Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle.

The Uncharted film, adapted from the popular video game franchise from developer Naughty Dog, has been in the works in one form or another since 2009 when the critically acclaimed Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was released. The games pull heavily from classic adventure films like Indiana Jones, featuring their own slew of cursed treasures, ancient ruins, and double-crossing villains. A fan film starring Nathan Fillion and featuring Stephen Lang and Mircea Monroe was released in 2018, and the upcoming official film is currently in production.

Nolan North, who voiced and did motion capture for Nathan Drake through the Uncharted games, recently made a set visit to the film and shared a few pictures on Twitter. The first shows north chatting with Holland, with a caption that reads, “Like looking into a mirror! Proud to have @TomHolland1996 continuing the Drake legacy! Absolutely smashing it!” The other two pictures seem to show glimpses of the sets – a dark, catacomb-style corridor in one, and an open history book in the other.

While the catacomb shot doesn’t reveal much (other than an apparent loyalty to the games’ tendency to send Drake into ancient, underground places), the book offers something of a potential clue to the movie’s plot. What few words are legible reference Charles V, who reigned as Holy Roman Emperor during the early-mid 16th century. While the picture could be insignificant or a ruse, it could also indicate a treasure hunt related to that period.

For fans of the franchise, North’s pictures should hopefully instill some degree of trust. Video game fans have been wronged so often by film adaptations that any project is viewed with trepidation. The set photos that could easily be screenshots out of the games themselves, plus Nolan’s vote of confidence in Holland’s Drake, while far from full proof of the movie’s authenticity, are certainly signs that things are heading in the right direction. Uncharted is slated for release on July 16, 2021.
