The upcoming Uncharted movie was designed for both fans of the video game and newcomers alike to have a good time. The film is based on the popular series of PlayStation games which has spanned four entries plus a spin-off since the release of the first game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, in 2007. The games follow treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his globetrotting adventures. The film adaptation stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Although Uncharted was originally set for a 2021 release, it is coming to theaters on February 18, 2022.

Uncharted was directed by Ruben Fleischer, who has experience bringing lively comic energy to darker subjects. The film that first brought him to prominence was the 2009 hit horror-comedy Zombieland, for which he also directed the ten-years-later sequel. He continued flexing his zombie comedy muscles when he helmed several episodes of Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet, but his most recent major hit was the 2018 Marvel film Venom, which spawned the equally successful Venom: Let There Be Carnage, currently in theaters.

The announcement on the PlayStation Blog following the release of the official Uncharted trailer shared a quote from Ruben Fleischer. He says they designed the film to be accessible for both "hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise." He assures readers that "both will be equally entertained" by the action film, which balances its thrills with the type of humor that Fleischer is certainly familiar with handling. [We] made the movie for both hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise and believe that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film.

Nathan Drake fighting a goon in Uncharted

Uncharted is an origin story that will introduce audiences to Nathan Drake (Holland) and his wisecracking partner Sully (Wahlberg). Although plot details are still light, the trailer revealed that the mysterious disappearance of Drake's brother Sam will lead them to unravel one of history’s greatest mysteries. Uncharted also stars Sophia Ali as Nathan Drake's love interest Chloe Frazer, Antonio Banderas as an as-yet-unnamed villain, and Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, an original character created for the film.

Uncharted is going to join the ranks of video game-centric films seeking crossover appeal. The game franchise doesn't have as wide a fanbase as longer-running properties like Sonic the Hedgehog or Tomb Raider, two of the more successful video game adaptations. However, Ruben Fleischer has made a habit of making tougher genres or concepts accessible to a wide audience. For instance, quite a few scaredy-cats would certainly list Zombieland as the only zombie movie they've ever seen. If there's anyone who has a shot at nailing crossover appeal for the franchise, it's him.
