The first footage for Sony's upcoming live-action adaptation of video game franchise Uncharted shows Tom Holland's Nathan Drake falling out of an airplane. While everyone has been focused on Holland's other upcoming blockbuster (this December's Spider-Man: No Way Home), Sony has been quietly prepping their next big video game adaptation for theaters. Originally slated to be released in June 2016, Uncharted has been delayed several times with different names attached to star and direct. Holland officially came onboard the film in 2017, signaling that the film version would follow a younger version of its main character.

Mark Wahlberg will star as Victor "Sully" Sullivan, Nathan Drake's longtime mentor and partner who helps the young fortune hunter on his adventures. Sophia Taylor will also appear as Chloe Frazer, Nathan's love interest in the games. Production on the film took place throughout 2020 and at one point Sony planned on releasing the film in 2021. Now, Uncharted is set to debut in theaters on February 18, 2022.

With Uncharted slated to premiere in just under six months, no footage has debuted for the general public yet. However, Sony just premiered some unseen footage from the film at CinemaCon. In the brief clips, a few sequences are shown, including one with Nathan Drake entering a cave-like area. Another shot shows Sully saying, "I’m offering you a chance to find/discover things you’ve only read about." The money shot seems to be a teaser of a major action sequence where Nathan Drake is seen falling out of a cargo plane with some of the cargo falling out with him. Finally, the sizzle reel ends with a shot of Sully at some sort of auction.

While Sony has been tight-lipped about the adaptation, likely waiting to ride the hype train of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it seems like the studio could soon start to heavily promote the film. While Holland is already extremely popular because of his turn in the MCU, with hype surrounding the actor's return as Spider-Man, Sony could certainly build on that by teasing yet another blockbuster with the young star. Uncharted is the perfect film to do just that.

While just as exhilarating as Spider-Man, Uncharted is a wholly different beast and it sounds like Holland will finally be getting an origin story for one of his characters after Spider-Man: Homecoming bucked conventions and introduced a fully-formed albeit naive Spidey. The brief dialogue from Wahlberg's Sully certainly hints at Nathan Drake being brought into the realm of fortune hunting, but it sounds like he'll be thrown into the world at full-force if the description of the action scene is any indication. Additionally, the scene described is reminiscent of one action sequence from the third Uncharted video game where Nathan falls out of a plane above a desert. Sony will likely include that footage and more in a first trailer for the film and it may be coming soon after all.
