Tom Holland reveals that production on Uncharted shut down on his first day of filming, continuing the project’s infamous run of bad luck. Uncharted is set to be an adaptation of the wildly popular video game franchise of the same name, which follows professional treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Purportedly a descendant of Sir Frances Drake, Nathan pursues historical gems and faces obstacles along his path. Holland, who will portray the live-action version of Drake, has said that the adaptation will take some inspiration from the fourth game in the Uncharted series, which sees Drake coming out of retirement to search for a long-lost treasure. Holland has also confirmed that the film will serve as an origin story for a younger iteration of Drake.

The adaptation has faced a number of hurdles on the way to the audiences. In development since 2008, a number of notable directors have been linked to the project. Names like David O. Russell, known for American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, was attached to helm the project. Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane, was announced as the director in January 2019 before dropping out in August. Despite these high-profile instances of turbulence, the Uncharted adaption appeared to be finally ready to get off the ground. Ruben Fleischer is now directing the feature, with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway collaborating on the script. Holland will be joined in the cast by Antonio Banderas, Sophie Ali and Tati Gabrielle. Mark Wahlberg, initially tapped for the lead role of Drake, has been recast as Victor Sullivan.

However, the unfortunate streak of Uncharted continues. Due to fallout from the coronavirus outbreak, the video game adaptation has experienced another delay. Originally slated for March 5, 2021, the movie is now scheduled for release on October 8, 2021. The fallout goes beyond that, per Heroic Hollywood, as Holland revealed that production shut down on his first day of filming. Holland’s comments were made during a recent appearance on Justin Bieber’s Instagram Live Q&A. “We showed up for our first day of shooting and they shut us down,” the actor said.

This recent postponement follows a trend that has touched virtually every film and television production. Sony Pictures, which is the studio behind Uncharted, also delayed several of its major titles planned for summer 2020. That includes Morbius and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

For those looking ahead to how moviegoers will respond when concerns over the coronavirus are under control, Holland provides an interesting case study. The Spider-Man star has a number of big projects lined up. In addition to the third installment in Jon Watts’ Homecoming franchise, Holland will reunite with the Russo brothers on Cherry. He’ll also star alongside Daisy Ridley as part of the long-awaited Chaos Walking. Still, even compared to all those anticipated features, Uncharted stands out for its protracted journey to the big screen.
