Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer reveals that he already has ideas for a sequel. Hot off the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, star Tom Holland's next blockbuster, Uncharted, releases later this week in the U.S. and Canada. Based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, Uncharted chronicles the adventures of a young Nathan Drake (Holland), who sets off on a quest to find the lost city of El Dorado and his lost brother.

Early reviews from critics for the film are decidedly mixed, but initial box office numbers are promising with the film having released in 15 markets thus far. Much like the games upon which it is based, Uncharted promises to provide heavy doses of action and a relatively light-hearted tone. One standout sequence that has been heavily featured in promotional material for the film shows Holland's Drake hanging outside of a cargo plane while fighting off bad guys, a sequence inspired by a similar moment in the third game in the series, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. In addition to Holland, Uncharted also stars Mark Wahlberg, Tati Gabrielle, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Antonio Banderas.

In an exclusive Screen Rant interview, Fleischer reveals that, if a sequel gets the green light, he has plenty of ideas. After working in the editing room for so long on the movie, he explains that he couldn't help but think up scenarios for a potential Uncharted 2. Of course, the first film hasn't even been officially released, so Fleischer concedes that a sequel is dependent upon how well the first movie performs. Check out Fleischer's full comment below:

"It depends on the success of the movie [Laughs]. No, yeah, of course. I have thoughts on it. When you sit in an editing room for a year working on a movie, it's hard not to dream up other adventures to take these guys on. So yeah, if we're lucky enough to get to make a sequel, I have a lot of ideas for things that I personally would want to try."

Tom Holland Uncharted

While early reviews for Uncharted are less than stellar, the film could still fare well at the box office and prove popular with general audiences when it releases later this week. Considering how popular the games are and the abundance of source material from which to draw, it's clear that Sony is hoping for Uncharted to act as a new franchise-starter. Although Fleischer doesn't go into detail about what his ideas for a potential Uncharted sequel are, the world of the games is vast and any number of sequences, characters, and storylines could be adapted into a sequel.

Ultimately, however, if a sequel is to get the green light, Uncharted is going to have to perform well financially. While critics' reviews are currently quite mixed, the most important metric of success determining whether or not a sequel happens will be Uncharted's box office performance. Considering the film's solid financial earnings thus far, the movie is not likely to be a flop, by any means, but poor word-of-mouth could impact the movie's bottom line ahead of its domestic release this week. If the movie does well, though, and Uncharted 2 gets the green light, it certainly sounds like Fleischer has no shortage of ideas.
