The Umbrella Academy season 2 saw Klaus trying and failing to stop Dave from joining the army – but what if he actually saved his life, though not exactly how he wanted. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix in February 2019 and was very well-received by critics and audiences, even surpassing one of the streaming giant’s most popular titles. The Umbrella Academy was renewed for a second season not long after, and all episodes were released in July 2020.
The Umbrella Academy follows the dysfunctional family of adopted siblings, the Hargreeves. All seven of them (along with other 36 babies) were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances, as none of their mothers was pregnant when the day began. Eccentric scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could, but only got seven – who he trained to form the superhero team “Umbrella Academy”, as they all developed superpowers. Season 1 saw the siblings reuniting for Reginald’s funeral and joining forces to stop the fast-approaching apocalypse – which turned out to be triggered by their supposedly powerless sister, Vanya (Ellen Page).
The Hargreeves failed to stop the end of the world, and their only way out was jumping to a safer point in time thanks to Five’s (Aidan Gallagher) abilities. The Umbrella Academy season 2 caught up with the team, who landed in Dallas but in different years between 1960 and 1963. The Hargreeves finally reunited in 1963, just a few days before the assassination of John F. Kennedy and a new apocalypse – but before that, most of them were forced to move on with their own lives. Klaus ended up creating a cult from which he ran away, but he also looked for Dave, a soldier he fell in love with when he accidentally traveled back in time in season 1. Klaus tried to stop him from joining the army, but he ended up enlisting earlier. However, that doesn’t mean Klaus failed at saving Dave, as there’s still a chance that he survived the war this time.
Dave Will Already Know Klaus When He Arrives In Vietnam
When Klaus escaped from Cha-Cha and Hazel in The Umbrella Academy season 1, he took a briefcase with him. Unbeknownst to him, the briefcase was a portable time machine, and when he tried to open it, he was sent back in time. Klaus ended up serving in the Vietnam war, where he met Dave and fell in love with him. Dave was killed in battle, and Klaus didn’t get over that loss. He managed to summon him briefly, but as the day was “restarted” due to Five’s actions, in the current timeline he didn’t get to speak to him after he passed away.
Once Klaus realized that he had a chance to see Dave again and actually stop him from enlisting (and thus save his life) now that he was in Dallas in 1963, he set out to do so. Klaus found Dave and did his best to convince him not to join the army by telling him that they had already met, but he did so in front of his homophobic uncle, which only made Dave enlist earlier. Now, the timelines in The Umbrella Academy work in mysterious ways, so if season 1 Klaus makes it to the war with the Dave that already met him, Dave would surely take his warning more seriously, and more so if he falls for him after truly getting to know him.
Dave Knows Exactly When & Where He’s Supposed To Die
In his attempt to save Dave, Klaus told him everything, including when and where he’s going to die. Whether he meets season 1’s Klaus or not, Dave will most likely be extra careful when that specific battle he was warned about arrives, as it would be inevitable to have a warning like that at the back of your mind. Dave could either choose to stay out of that mission or simply keep his head down a little more, thus saving himself from dying in battle, as 1963 Klaus told him.
Dave May Have Joined A Different Branch Of The Army
Dave joined the army earlier, but that doesn’t mean everything after that went exactly like it did in the first timeline. It’s unknown which branch of the army Dave and Klaus were a part of, as that wasn’t mentioned nor hinted at in season 1, only showing them in battle and in parties. In season 2, however, when Dave gets on the bus, the officer in charge calls him a marine, which could point at Dave joining a different branch of the army this time. This seemingly minor change could be the one that saves his life, leaving him out of that dangerous battle that saw his demise in season 1.
Could Dave Return In The Umbrella Academy Season 3?
Assuming Dave enlisted when he was 18-years-old and he survived the war, he would be around 75 years old in 2020, as the Hargreeves are now back in the present (though a different one where the Sparrow Academy exists and the Umbrella team doesn’t). As Klaus has more control over his powers now, he might try to summon Dave to no success, realizing that he survived the war. Klaus could then set out to find him, and whether they decide to continue with their relationship or not would be up to them and whatever threats and events happen in The Umbrella Academy season 3.
Dave has been an important part of Klaus’ arc, as The Umbrella Academy showed the real Klaus through him. Given his drug addiction and other problems, Klaus was often left aside by his siblings, which along with all his childhood trauma led him to build a shield of humor and sarcasm around him, only showing his real self to a few. Klaus opened up a bit more in season 2, and this development could continue in season 3 with the help of an older Dave – and, of course, it would be a great opportunity to give proper closure to their relationship.
