The Umbrella Academy’s seven members have powers beyond the realm of imagination, but the majority of them have undergone some changes when the series was adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s original comics. The Umbrella Academy follows a family of adopted siblings with special abilities, who were collected as babies by the mysterious Sir Reginald Hargreeves. In order to save the world, he trained each of them to hone their gifts for the future disasters and the impending apocalypse they have faced twice in their lifetimes. While each of the children have their own unique capabilities, not all of them manifest as the original powers from the The Umbrella Academy comics.

With the recent release of The Umbrella Academy season 2, the original source material gained new readership from fans interested in the truth behind Hargreeves and the future of the academy. In fact, it topped Amazon’s sales on graphic novels within a week of its release. The Umbrella Academy's line-up of sort-of-superheroes includes Luther/Number 1 (Tom Hopper), Diego/Number 2 (David Castañeda), Allison/Number 3 (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus/Number 4 (Robert Sheehan), Number 5 (Aidan Gallagher), and Vanya/Number 7 (Ellen Page). Klaus also uses his abilities to bring back the ghostly Ben/Number 6 (Justin H. Min), who was killed on a mission when they were teenagers.

Over the past month, the anticipation for what’s to come in The Umbrella Academy season 3 has reached an all time high - especially given that the ending of season 2 ties into the ending of Hotel Oblivion, the latest graphic novel. There is no telling where season 3 will find the Hargreeves children, but the newly-revealed Sparrow Academy will undoubtedly introduce new powers, characters, and probably another apocalypse. As of the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2, here is every superpower from the comics that the TV show changed, left out, or perhaps simply has yet to introduce.

Number 1 - Luther

Luther in a space suit on the moon in Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy Netflix series stays fairly true to its source material in regards to Luther, also known as Number 1 and “Spaceboy," except for how he gained his powers. The show introduces him as already having super strength but he was not actually born with this ability. Luther does have super strength but, according to the graphic novel, it was only acquired after his head was attached to an ape's body. It appears as though he did not have any powers until that moment. The series likely excluded this in order to maintain his role as the leader of the academy. If Luther had been introduced as lacking in powers, his characterization as the strongest of the 7 would not have made sense.

Number 2 - Diego

Diego Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy

In the graphic novels and series, Diego is referred to as "The Kraken" due to his ability to hold his breath for an indefinite amount of time. Among other things, this makes him capable of swimming underwater for long periods of time, much like the legendary sea monster he's named after. So far we have yet to see him display this ability in The Umbrella Academy TV show, though he hasn't really been in any situations that would call for holding his breath. Besides that omission, Diego's ability to curve the trajectory of projectiles (in particular his throwing knives) is present in both the TV show and comics.

Number 3 - Allison

Umbrella Academy's Allison

Allison’s powers are less extreme in the series than they are in the comics. While she is able to manipulate people into doing whatever she wants them to do as “The Rumor,” the Netflix show does not feature her ability to alter others' perception of their surroundings. The Umbrella Academy season 2's big apocalyptic opening sequence did, however, tease a unique ability from the comics that hadn't yet been seen in the show: the power to manipulate reality. In the comics she is able to make an out-of-stock item appear simply by saying she "heard a rumor" the store still had it available. In the TV show she says, "I heard a rumor that I blew your minds," causing three soldiers' heads to explode - something that clearly goes beyond simple mind control. It remains to be seen whether this power will be used again in season 3.

Number 4 - Klaus

The Umbrella Academy Klaus Season 2

Klaus, also known as “The Séance,” has the ability to channel the deceased, including his brother Ben. Both versions of the character rely on the dead for most of their superpowers. In the comics, however, Klaus is able to possess people as well as communicate through the airwaves, allowing for him to project himself onto TVs and radios. It isn’t a drastic alteration to his powers, but it is left out in favor of making Ben into a more active member of the academy.

Number 5

The nameless Number 5 has the power to jump through time. Both versions of The Umbrella Academy portray this capability in the same way with very little change to the character. The only major difference between the two is the fact that the series never mentions that his outstanding career as the perfect assassin was due to the fusion of his DNA with the world’s most notorious killers. Whether or not this constitutes a superpower is debatable, but it does allow for him to have another power alongside time travel.

Number 6 - Ben

While Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy made Ben, also known as “The Horror” part of the main story line, the comics did not. In fact, he does not make an appearance other than getting ice cream after a battle and in the form of a statue outside of the academy. It is known that his powers are derived from the ability to conjure monsters from other dimensions and manifest them through his body. This is featured in the series but, due to the little information provided on the character in the comics, the show can create whatever superpowers for Ben it desires. His capabilities are rather ambiguous, which may make for an exhilarating season 3.

Number 7 - Vanya

Vanya demonstrating her powers in The Umbrella Academy

Vayna’s superpowers are far more potent in TV show than they are in the source material. In the comics, “The White Violin” can only manifest her abilities while playing her violin, and only orchestrated the apocalypse with the help of The Conductor and his apocalyptic song writing. The series takes her powers a step further by allowing her to utilize sound waves that are not solely allocated to her violin - even her own heartbeat. Overall, this change enhanced the character and made Vanya more entertaining than in the graphic novel. Regardless of how her superpowers were altered, she remains the strongest out of the seven siblings, according to Sir Reginald.

-

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy did not drastically alter every character’s superpowers, but they did create new capabilities, removed others that may have complicated the story, and enhanced some of the most interesting ones.

According to the comics, Sir Reginald Hargreeves numbered the children based on the strength of their powers. Therefore, Ben’s depiction in the series is an enhancement on the original character due to the fact that he is right below Vanya in the ranking system. Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will undoubtedly expand on Ben’s capabilities, as he appears to be the leader of the Sparrow Academy. Meanwhile, the other members will add some interesting new powers to the mix as well.
