Ahead of The Umbrella Academy season 3, Elliot Page’s character name has been confirmed as Viktor Hargreeves, giving insight into his new story. Arguably the most powerful member of The Umbrella Academy, Viktor Hargreeves was convinced for a long time that they had no powers, unlike his siblings. However, in The Umbrella Academy season 1, their powers are unlocked and Viktor Hargreeves causes an apocalypse, before coming close to doing so again in The Umbrella Academy season 2 after time traveling to the 1960s.

Elliot Page portrayed Viktor Hargreeves, also known as Number Seven, in The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2. In December 2020, Elliot Page stated that they were non-binary and updated their pronouns to he/they. Since Page’s disclosure, there has been much speculation about how his own experiences might inform Viktor Hargreeves’ story, particularly within parts of the queer community who are optimistic for more positive representation.

In a Twitter post Elliot Page reintroduced their The Umbrella Academy character for season 3 saying “Meet Viktor Hargreeves” with an image of Viktor Hargreeves sitting at dinner with his sister, Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver Lampman). It is possible that the Viktor Hargreeves sitting in the diner is not the original character that appears in The Umbrella Academy season 2, but is instead a figure from The Sparrow Academy in the alternate timeline that the Hargreeves family arrived in at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2. However, the fact that Viktor Hargreeves is sitting in the diner alongside Allison Hargreeves seems to suggest that Elliot Page’s Viktor Hargreeves is the same character they have always been.

Viktor's Transition In Umbrella Academy Season 3 Continues S2's Story

Viktor Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy

In The Umbrella Academy season 3, the show will have to discuss Viktor Hargreeves’ transition, at least in part. While there might have been a positive aspect to simply presenting Viktor Hargreeves without discussion and moving along with the story, Viktor’s The Umbrella Academy season 2 story necessitates that their changes not go unmentioned. In The Umbrella Academy season 1, Viktor had a romantic entanglement with a man, Leonard Peabody (John Magaro), and in season 2 with a woman named Sissy (Marin Ireland). At the time, The Umbrella Academy was lauded for its LGBTQ+ representation. However, to present Viktor as a transmasculine figure at this point without any in-world explanation would risk playing into some toxic anti-trans talking points that have been gaining traction over the past two years.

However, this gives The Umbrella Academy an opportunity to explore both Viktor Hargreeves and queer themes in more depth, continuing the work the show began in season 2. Viktor’s character growth since The Umbrella Academy season 1 has been dramatic, as he has become less withdrawn from people and that opened them up to explore their romantic and sexual inclinations. By acknowledging Viktor Hargreeves’ transition in The Umbrella Academy season 3, the show can delve deeper into Viktor’s exploration of self in a way that will play into the themes of identity that all the characters have struggled with since the death of their father figure, Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) in The Umbrella Academy season 1.
