As The Umbrella Academy's cast members tease a totally new ride in season 3, which ingredients make the Hargreeves' futures so radically different from past misadventures? Adapting the comic world created by My Chemical Romance frontman, Gerard Way, Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has spent 2 whole seasons torturing the Hargreeves siblings in increasingly macabre ways. When The Umbrella Academy begins, Luther, Allison, Diego, Klaus, Five and Vanya are already the epitome of dysfunction. They then endure at least three variations of the apocalypse, Vanya becoming the White Violin, Allison losing her ability to speak, an array of unsuccessful romantic endeavors, Vietnam, and, of course, Five constantly being an insufferable know-it-all.

Production is currently underway on The Umbrella Academy season 3, and though plot details remain scarce, cast members have been helpful in providing updates. Confirming season 3 is currently in the process of recording ADR, Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison) describes "a completely different energy" to The Umbrella Academy's upcoming return. It's intriguing how those closest to the Hargreeves characters feel winds of change blowing, but why will The Umbrella Academy season 3 be such a dramatic departure?

Thanks to season 2's shock time-bending ending grabbing all the headlines, it's easy to overlook just how different the Hargreeves siblings who arrive back in 2019 are compared to the sextet who departed in season 1's finale. Trapped in the 1960s, each character struck out alone. Allison got married, Luther overcome his funk, Klaus led an actual cult, and Diego and Vanya both fell in love (with different people!). The six siblings have now returned to the time and place they left behind, but all have been changed hugely by their 1960s experiences. Luther, Allison, Diego, Klaus, Five and Vanya all grown immeasurably as individuals, maturing, evolving, and carrying even more scars than before. Little wonder The Umbrella Academy season 3 has a "completely different energy."

Umbrella Academy's Allison

Surely, the Sparrow Academy is at least partly to blame for any tonal shift in The Umbrella Academy season 3. Until now, the Umbrella kids believed their adulthood traumas were caused by having a cold and other-worldly adopted father in Sir Reginald. The Sparrow Academy were also raised by Reginald as superheroes (and even share a member with the Umbrellas), but look to be a model of familial bliss. The original Hargreeves siblings are suddenly confronted with alternate versions of themselves that are - on the surface, at least - better in every way. Whether they like it or not, Luther, Allison, Diego, Klaus, Five and Vanya are all defined by their association with the Umbrella Academy. How do they cope in a world where that history never happened? Do alternate versions of themselves exist in this altered timeline? There's nothing like a parallel universe counterpart to kick-start your emotional journey of self-discovery.

They might possess gifts galore, but the Umbrella Academy's real superpower is an uncanny ability to bicker and argue in any given situation. Whether trying to stop their own sister destroying the planet, or reuniting in Dallas on the eve of President Kennedy's assassination, the Hargreeves kids are at each other's throats more often than not. The Umbrella Academy season 3's emergence of the Sparrow Academy could bring the gang closer together than ever before - either because the OG characters can finally see what a functioning, healthy supergroup looks like, or because the only way to defeat such a well-drilled team is by becoming a well-drilled team... if they can.

As well promising different energy, Emmy Raver-Lampman also describes The Umbrella Academy season 3 as "massive" and hints toward more departures from the original comic. Though Netflix's past two seasons both had moments of epicness, The Umbrella Academy has told more isolated stories thus far. Maybe season 3 is where the show really lets loose, introducing new members of the 43 super-powered kids and diving headfirst into time travel craziness. If rumors are to be believed, The Umbrella Academy season 3 will revisit season 2 scenes from a new temporal perspective, Back to the Future Part II style. Unleashing the full potential of Gerard Way's mad concept might explain why The Umbrella Academy season 3 is a whole new vibe compared to the Hargreeves family's past antics.
