As The Umbrella Academy season 3 will offer a look at the alternate Sparrow Academy universe, it would follow that each member of the titular team will have their own alternate universe doppelganger. Netflix's adaption of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's comic book series of the same name has deviated significantly from the source material over its first two seasons. Early indications are that The Umbrella Academy season 3 will do the same, introducing its titular team to their alternate universe counterparts, the Sparrow Academy.

After saving the world in season 1, the events of The Umbrella Academy season 2 saw the Hargreeves siblings navigating Dallas in the early 1960s. Though this story was based loosely on the "Dallas" comic arc, the specifics of the story were changed for the Netflix series. The Umbrella Academy season 2 ended with the Hargreeves siblings traveling forward to their own time, only to find themselves in an alternate universe in which they were never adopted by Reginald Hargreeves. Faced with their counterparts, the Sparrow Academy, The Umbrella Academy season 2 ends with a tease of what season 3 will hold.

As The Umbrella Academy season 3 takes the Hargreeves siblings into an alternate version of their own present day, it would follow that they each have an alternate self that exists within the Sparrow universe. This is not only in keeping with traditional alternate universe logic, but seemingly confirmed by the presence of their brother Ben in the Sparrow Academy. As none of the other Hargreeves siblings are presented among the Sparrow Academy's ranks, it would appear that the alternate universe saw Reginald Hargreeves adopt different children out of the 43 born on October 1, 1989. This begs the question: how would the lives of the members of the Umbrella Academy be different without the intervention of Reginald Hargreeves?

Season 2 Revealed Ben Is In The Sparrow Academy (And Alive)

Ben and the Sparrow Academy in Umbrella Academy Season 2

The final moments of The Umbrella Academy season 2 reveal that not only is Ben alive in the alternate timeline but that he's also a member of the Sparrow Academy. This seemingly makes him the only child adopted by Reginald Hargreeves in both timelines, and hints that the reason for Ben being alive in the Sparrow Academy's universe may be to do with the Umbrella Academy themselves. As Ben's existence seems to confirm the nature of the alternate universe, it forms the basis of the theory about the other Hargreeves siblings' respective doppelgangers.

Luther Was Never Injected With The Serum

Netflix the umbrella academy cast

The Umbrella Academy's Number One, Luther, is most easily identifiable by his large, ape-like body. In the Netflix series, this body is the result of an experimental serum used on Luther in order to save his life after a mission gone wrong. However, alternate universe logic makes it unlikely that Luther's Sparrow universe doppelganger will look the same way.

If The Umbrella Academy season 3's Luther was never adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, then he was almost certainly never sent on the mission that resulted in his transformation. Without the serum changing his appearance, Luther's powers in The Umbrella Academy season 3 should simply be the super-strength he was born with. How the different upbringing would have affected his character remains to be seen, but the alternate timeline almost certainly means that Luther's physical appearance will be very different in season 3.

Diego Is A Well-Adjusted Police Officer

Diego and Eudora Patch Netflix Umbrella Academy

Diego is a complex character, and the Netflix adaptation has hardly explored his powers at all. However, one of the key elements of his characterization in the show is his rivalry with Luther and his love for the Hargreeves siblings' surrogate mother, Grace, a robotic caregiver designed by Sir Reginald. However, the alternate timeline version of Diego would likely be an entirely different person.

The two biggest aspects of Diego's personality stem from his emotional reactions to elements of his upbringing. The Umbrella Academy's Diego Hargreeves was so shaped by his childhood, that had he been raised by his own mother, he'd likely have grown up to be far more well-adjusted. Diego in particular seems to strive for a more normal life, and had he not been adopted by Sir Reginald, he could have been afforded one. Not only are his powers subtle enough to conceal, but Diego has shown real interest in police work, meaning that the alternate (and better emotionally adjusted) version of the character most likely exists as a cop in the Sparrow universe.

Allison Has No Daughter (And May Be A Villain)

allison hargreeves season 1 hospital police investigation

The nature of Allison's power makes her one of the most complex members of the Umbrella Academy. This isn't something that would be changed by the alternate timeline - Allison's powers in The Umbrella Academy would still tempt and corrupt her regardless of Hargreeves' influence. However, a different upbringing would make it less likely that Allison ever met Patrick, her ex-husband, meaning that her daughter Claire is unlikely to exist in the Sparrow universe.

Claire was Allison's biggest motivation throughout season 1 (and, in some ways, season 2), and was one of the few things that gave her hope for the future. However, as Allison has shown on numerous occasions that she's willing to use her power selfishly, without the grounding influence of her adopted siblings or her daughter, she may well have become a villain. As using her powers irresponsibly was how Allison lost custody of her daughter, Claire not existing in the Sparrow universe will likely make the alternate Allison act even less responsible for the scope of her power.

Klaus's Life Would Be Tragic Without The Umbrella Academy

Umbrella Academy Klaus

In The Umbrella Academy's main timeline, Klaus' power has led him to some dark places. Seeing the dead from such a young age affected Klaus, but through the support of his siblings (and the training of Sir Reginald, no matter how barbaric it may have been), he was able to come through his childhood as a reasonably well-rounded person. Throughout seasons 1 and 2 of The Umbrella Academy, Ben is shown to act as Klaus' conscience, keeping him from harming himself in any major way, and even saving his life on at least one occasion.

Had Reginald Hargreeves not adopted Klaus, he would have grown up without his siblings. Klaus is perhaps the member of the Umbrella Academy who most relies on his adopted siblings, meaning that his life without them would have been far worse. As a small child struggling to manage his particular powers alone, Klaus would likely have been driven insane by what he was forced to see by his powers. This means that the alternate timeline version of Klaus has likely had a far more difficult life without the grounding influence of his adoptive siblings to support him.

Five Would Most Likely Have Died Without Reginald Hargreeves

Five in The Umbrella Academy.

Much of Five's story in the Netflix adaptation is as yet unknown, as he spent many years working for the Temps Commission off-screen before returning to the Umbrella Academy to avert the apocalypse. However, small indications lead to the theory that Five's alternate universe counterpart may well be dead. Five's powers in The Umbrella Academy involve teleportation and time travel, and shortly before he disappears, he is shown arguing with Sir Reginald about time travel.

This hints that Reginald Hargreeves was the one preventing Five from overextending his powers as a young boy. Therefore, it follows that without the strict boundaries set by Hargreeves in the Umbrella Academy, the alternate Five would have tried time travel much earlier. A small child accidentally traveling through time (particularly to the apocalypse) would almost have certainly resulted in disaster, leading to the theory that Five may not have a living doppelganger.

How Viktor's Story Could Fit The Theory

Viktor Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy

It has already been announced that The Umbrella Academy season 3 introduces Viktor Hargreeves, which will incorporate Elliot Page's own transition into the show's story. Though the exact nature of Viktor's arrival within the show is not confirmed to be related to the alternate universe, there's a very simple and natural connection that could perhaps explain where it fits into the narrative. As Vanya Hargreeves of The Umbrella Academy was treated particularly poorly by Sir Reginald (and their siblings) due to the extreme nature of her power, they were shown in season 1 to have grown up with very little confidence.

Had Vanya not been adopted by Sir Reginald, however, they may have grown to be a far more confident and assertive person. This could act as an explanation for why Viktor Hargreeves is Vanya's own doppelganger, and it could also prompt Vanya to explore their own gender identity. Done tastefully, it could be an excellent way to break down the persistent misconceptions about trans people by offering context for the way in which gender identity factors in to not only The Umbrella Academy's alternate universe story but the lives of its characters, too.
