Netflix reveals that The Umbrella Academy season 3 will officially arrive sometime in 2022, nearly two years after season 2 came to a close. Based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's graphic novels of the same name, the story revolves around the dysfunctional Hargreeves family of adopted sibling superheroes who are brought back together following the mysterious death of their father, only to subsequently learn of an impending apocalypse. Season 2 saw the group travel back in time utilizing Five's power after failing to stop the apocalypse, only to be separated across various years in 1960s Dallas and Five forced to try and bring them together again to stop a new apocalypse.

The cast for The Umbrella Academy includes Elliot Page as Vanya, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Five, Justin H. Min as Ben and Colm Feore as patriarch Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Across its two seasons, the series has received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, namely the more tonally balanced season 2, and drawn in solid viewership for Netflix, becoming the third-most popular series for the streamer in 2019 and the sixth-most streamed in 2020 with over 43 million viewers. After being renewed in November 2020, The Umbrella Academy season 3 began production in February and with it now wrapped, Netflix has exciting news for fans.

Just over a month after production wrapped, Netflix has revealed that The Umbrella Academy season 3 will officially debut in 2022. The streamer also confirmed that the new chapter will take place at the Hotel Oblivion, the name of the third volume in the source graphic novel series. No exact premiere date has been given at the time of writing.

The announcement of The Umbrella Academy's return is sure to be exciting news for fans of the graphic novels and series, especially following the shocking cliffhanger ending of season 2. The timing of the 2022 premiere also falls in line with the previous seasons of the series, with season 2 arriving just eight months after filming concluded, likely putting season 3 on track to premiere early next year. The announcement that season 3 will take place at the Hotel Oblivion is interesting, however, given the season 2's finale introducing the Sparrow Academy as a primary conflict heading into the show's next chapter.

Those familiar with the source material are aware of the show's deviations, but the Sparrow Academy have the interesting distinction of being one of the biggest changes in The Umbrella Academy season 3. While they were introduced in Hotel Oblivion, their origins were that of seven of the 43 super-powered kids not adopted by Sir Reginald and whose origins are set to be explored further in the yet-to-be-released fourth volume, aptly subtitled Sparrow Academy, seemingly putting the series on a trajectory to surpass the graphic novels' stories. Only time will tell if this proves problematic in a similar vein to HBO's Game of Thrones when The Umbrella Academy returns in 2022.
