The Umbrella Academy viewers have been patiently waiting for answers regarding Sir Reginald Hargreeves and his alien origins, but early signs strongly suggest an explanation is imminent in season 3. Netflix's The Umbrella Academy is packed with mysteries. How did Ben Hargreeves die? Where did the Sparrow Academy come from? Is it weird to hope Luther and Allison get together? By far the biggest question, however, is the truth of Reginald Hargreeves. Where does he come from? Why did he travel to Earth? What's his connection to the 43 super-powered children? And what's hiding on the dark side of the moon?

The Umbrella Academy season 1 showed a glimpse of Reginald's old life - his late lover, a dying planet, and a strange jar of fireflies. The Umbrella Academy season 2 dared go further, revealing Sir Reginald's true alien appearance, with the outward visage of Colm Feore just a zip-fastened skin suit. Nevertheless, The Umbrella Academy still has much to resolve, and even more so given how Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's comics don't hold every answer. Sir Reginald Hargreeves will return in The Umbrella Academy season 3, but it's the rapid rise of strange new technology that proves aliens will be top of the to-do list.

Until now, technology in The Umbrella Academy has stayed faithful to each season's time period. As an extra-terrestrial, Reginald obviously has knowledge of futuristic gizmos and outlandish science, and he handed over many an invention to the Majestic 12 in exchange for their help. But to keep his true history hidden from the Hargreeves siblings, Reginald has used his technology sparsely on Earth. The most fantastical item in the Hargreeves mansion is the siblings' android mother Grace, and while undoubtedly unusual, nothing in the Umbrella Academy's life screams "alien."

Umbrella Academy season 2 Reginald Hargreeves

That's no longer the case in The Umbrella Academy season 3. One of the Sparrow Academy members from season 2's finale takes the form of a green floating cube called Christopher. Though Christopher's consciousness inhabits the cube, it's not yet known why he looks like a square lump. Maybe Christopher was just a psychic essence, but Reginald Hargreeves built the cube as a physical vessel. That kind of technology extends way beyond robot nannies, and brings Reginald's alien-ness straight to the fore. Also confirmed for The Umbrella Academy season 3 is Hotel Oblivion. From the comic books, Hotel Oblivion is an interplanetary prison for the Umbrella Academy's (or, in this case, probably the Sparrow Academy's) captured villains. Again, Hotel Oblivion opening its doors in The Umbrella Academy season 3 means there's no getting away from explaining the Reginald Hargreeves mystery.

The presence of Christopher's cube and Hotel Oblivion in The Umbrella Academy season 3 suggests Reginald has been open and honest with the Sparrow Academy about his non-human biology, whereas the Umbrella kids always were kept in the dark. That makes sense, since Reginald is so much friendlier around the Sparrows, but it also means the truth about his past will come out sooner rather than later. Once the Umbrella Academy see their adoptive father's alternate timeline has floating cubes and alien prisons, they'll probably begin questioning their mentor's origin, allowing fans to finally discover where Sir Reginald Hargreeves came from, and more importantly, what his intentions are on Earth.
