There are many mysteries waiting to be solved in The Umbrella Academy, but a batch of character posters for season 3 might solve one of the biggest ones: the birthplaces of each member of the Umbrella Academy. The rise of the superhero genre in film and TV has made way for lesser-known and darker stories to be adapted to these, and one of the most popular titles in recent years is The Umbrella Academy. Created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix in February 2019, and it became so popular that it’s currently preparing for the release of its third season.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven kids who, along with other 36 babies around the world, were born on the same day and under the same mysterious circumstances. This curious event led scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves to adopt as many of those babies as he could, but he only got seven. As they developed superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed The Umbrella Academy, but the team gradually parted ways and reunited many years later when Reginald died and the end of the world was fast-approaching. The Hargreeves have since been working on healing their relationship as siblings and as a team, and during that process, they have learned more about their origin, but there are still many questions waiting to be answered.

The Hargreeves (and the audience) now know that they are not the only children from those 43 babies to have superpowers, but why exactly were they born under those strange circumstances and more is still unknown. One of the biggest questions about the Hargreeves’ backstory is where they were born, as The Umbrella Academy has only shown that one of them was born in Russia, but it’s unclear who – however, a batch of character posters for season 3 might reveal where each member of the Umbrella Academy team was born, all thanks to the stickers on their luggage.

Umbrella Academy stickers birthplaces

If the stickers on the suitcases of each Umbrella Academy member are from the place they were born, that means that Luther is from Stockholm, Diego is from México, Allison was born in Capetown, Klaus is from Pennsylvania, Five comes from Dublin, Viktor is from Russia (thus confirming he’s the baby shown at the beginning of The Umbrella Academy season 1), and Lila is from Berlin. Executive producer Steve Blackman revealed in a Reddit AMA that the Hargreeves got their names because Grace helped them choose them based on their birthplace (and Five was already gone by then), and the stickers of most of the team fit that idea. However, some of them come as a surprise and don't quite fit with their birthplace, at least not on the surface. For example, Klaus was believed to have been born in Europe, but as CBR points out, he might have been born in the Pennsylvania Dutch culture, which was formed by German immigrants.

Luther’s possible birthplace also comes as a surprise, but his name has a Germanic origin and is considered a Nordic name. Lila’s sticker is also a twist, as she was implied to have been born in East London, but again, her backstory is also a mystery. These stickers also confirm a big change from the comics, as they show that in the Netflix series, Luther and Five are not twins, with Luther being born in Sweden and Five in Ireland. As for why the character posters are subtly revealing where each of the Hargreeves (and Lila) was born, it’s possible that The Umbrella Academy season 3 will see them learning about their origins and even meeting their mothers, though that might not exactly be a comforting experience. As the release date for The Umbrella Academy season 3 approaches, more plot details will most likely be revealed, but as has happened with the previous seasons, the new episodes will surely be full of twists and turns and the Hargreeves will continue to go through some not-so-pleasant experiences as they continue to learn about their origins.
