The recent teaser trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 3 hints that Luther will finally prove his surrogate father, Sir Reginald, right and become the leader he was born to be. Ironically, it appears that this will be in an effort to defeat Sir Reginald's new team of "heroes": The Sparrows. In this trailer, the entire team is seen assembling to fight their new counterparts and Luther appears to be taking the lead on this, standing front and center and preparing to organize his family for a fight. However, The Sparrows do appear to have a strategic advantage in their movements and preparedness.
In the final moments of The Umbrella Academy season 2, the Umbrella family traveled in space and time to reemerge in their family home, expecting to find everything as normal. However, they instead find their father figure alive and well, to some of their disappointment, as it becomes clear they haven't returned to the same version of events they initially left. Instead, Reginald had formed a new team of heroes, suggesting that in this reality the Umbrella Academy was not formed, and instead Sir Reginald trained a different superhero team known as The Sparrows.
Since the first episode of The Umbrella Academy, Luther has been constantly seeking his father's approval, even following Reginald Hargreeves' death. The lengths that Reginald went to test and torment Luther through the years eventually culminated in a realization of betrayal - as Luther realized he was sent to the moon for seemingly no reason - and lead to Luther's resentment of his late mentor and father figure. Having largely overcome these feelings, Luther has now been thrown back into the role of team leader, once again in front of the eyes of Sir Reginald. This new confrontation with The Sparrows set up in the Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer will be Luther's opportunity to demonstrate his developed leading skills and hopefully prove Sir Reginald's faith in him as a leader right - through the defeat of The Sparrows. Umbrella Academy season 3 is building towards being a very different series than the ones that have come before, with a host of new characters.
In previous seasons, audiences have seen Luther's dramatic transformation into the half-ape, half-man that is seen on the Netflix show. This transformation was developed by Sir Reginald in an effort to preserve Luther's life after Luther risked everything to be the leader and prove his father's faith right. After this moment, he was sent away to the moon to "protect Earth". It appears that he was really sent there for one of two reasons; either to stay out of the way after his poor show as the leader of The Umbrella Academy, or to protect him after such a high-risk adventure. Either way, Luther was left with a father-complex, determined to show Sir Reginald that he is deserving of a leader role. It is this brief teaser trailer of The Umbrella Academy season 3 that highlights his returning motivation to lead The Umbrella Academy, with a family and team that may be stronger than ever.
Whilst the teaser trailer for season 3 was short, it is clear that The Umbrella Academy is going to be offering a developed team of heroes, who have spent two seasons learning how to work together and stay strong as a united front. This theory appears that it will be put to the test in the early moments of season 3, which seemingly sets up a brawl with The Sparrows. The Umbrella Academy season 3 will hopefully answer many unanswered questions when it airs in June 2022.
