The Umbrella Academy season 3 has many mysteries to solve that have been building up since season 1, and through a key location, it can fix Luther’s moon mission by giving it a big purpose. The superhero genre has grown so much in the last decade that it has allowed darker and lesser-known stories and characters to be adapted to film and TV, and among those is The Umbrella Academy. Created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix in 2019 and became an instant hit, and fans are now patiently waiting for season 3 to arrive.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted children who were born on the same day and under the same mysterious circumstances as other 36 children around the world. These seven kids were adopted by scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who as the kids developed superpowers, trained them and formed the team “The Umbrella Academy”. Season 1 saw them reteaming to stop the apocalypse, which they failed at, so they jumped to another place and time to save themselves. Season 2 caught up with the team in 1963 Dallas, Texas, and ended on a major cliffhanger as the Hargreeves returned to their present (2019) and learned that Reginald created the Sparrow Academy instead of their team.

A different team taking their place will surely open old wounds as Reginald wasn’t a good father to the Umbrella Academy, and one of the members of the team who has a lot of issues to solve with Reginald is Luther (Tom Hopper). Luther was the only one who remained loyal to Reginald and the team and continued working for him until a mission gone wrong left him on the verge of dying. To save him, Reginald injected Luther with a serum that changed a big part of his body and turned it into that of an ape, after which Reginald sent him to the moon. Luther later learned that Reginald never read his reports from the moon, which sent him into a depression. Now, The Umbrella Academy season 3 could fix Luther’s moon mission by giving it a secret but very important purpose: keeping it safe from Hotel Oblivion.

Hotel Oblivion in The Umbrella Academy comic

Although plot details for The Umbrella Academy season 3 haven’t been revealed yet, the complete list of episodes was released in 2021, and the season finale is titled “Hotel Oblivion”. The third volume of the Umbrella Academy comics is titled Hotel Oblivion, and it introduces the title hotel, which is actually a prison that on the outside looks like a luxury hotel. Inside, however, Hotel Oblivion is a prison where the rooms have self-help material to push the residents to “rehabilitate”, the food has no flavor, the TVs show surreal cartoons, and the view out of the window is of a strange and nightmarish dimension – it’s basically torture even for villains. Hotel Oblivion is located on a distant, unknown planet, though many fans have theorized it could actually be on the moon, specifically on its dark side. The Umbrella Academy season 2 revealed Reginald was interested in the dark side of the moon since the 1960s, so it wouldn’t be surprising if season 3 reveals that Reginald built the hotel on that side of the moon and sent Luther there to make sure everything was under control, without actually revealing to him that there was a prison there so he wouldn’t directly interfere with it.

Given all the changes that Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy has already done to the source material, it wouldn’t be surprising if Hotel Oblivion also went through changes to fit the show’s narrative and style, and it could be used to answer a couple of questions and fix the story of Luther’s moon mission. This would also add another layer to his already complicated relationship with Reginald, as he would have kept important information from him and used him for secret purposes.
