Elliot Page will still play Vanya when The Umbrella Academy returns for season 3. The superhero series has been a hit for Netflix, with many coming to enjoy the dysfunctional Hargreeves family. Season 1 premiered early last year and followed the adopted heroes in the present-day. However, season 2, which came out in July 2020, mixed things up by sending the group to the 1960s. The season ended on a cliffhanger, making viewers relieved when Netflix renewed The Umbrella Academy for season 3 last month. The new season doesn't have a release date yet, but filming will begin in early 2021. Additionally, the season 3 premiere is titled "Meet the Family," likely in reference to The Sparrow Academy and its members.
Page has long been a standout of The Umbrella Academy thanks to his role as Vanya Hargreeves. This week, Page came out as a non-binary transgender person, sharing his pronouns are he/they. He posted an impactful message on social media. Many, including Page's The Umbrella Academy co-star Justin H. Min, voiced their support for the actor.
Shortly after Page's announcement, Variety reported he will continue to play Vanya on The Umbrella Academy. Insiders also stated there are no plans to change Vanya's gender. Nick Adams, director of transgender media at GLAAD, spoke on this matter, saying, "Trans actors can and do play both trans and cisgender characters. I’m sure Elliot will continue to be brilliant in Umbrella Academy and many different types of roles in the future." Additionally, Netflix began the process of updating Page's name in his movies and shows Tuesday, with the changes showing throughout the day.
While many expected Page would continue to play Vanya in The Umbrella Academy season 3, it's wonderful to know it for sure. The character is a huge part of the show, and it's impossible to imagine anyone other than Page in the role. He did an excellent job in the first two seasons and will continue to do so when The Umbrella Academy season 3 begins filming next year.
The new season is shaping up to be an exciting one for the show. With the changes to the timeline introduced in the season 2 finale, it will be interesting to see how Vanya and the other members of the Hargreeves family react in the new episodes. Considering the relatively warm reception to the first two seasons of The Umbrella Academy, it's hard to image season 3 won't be a success. Hopefully, a release date announcement is made in the near future. At the very least, there should be some exciting teases once shooting begins, which will only increase anticipation for the upcoming season.
