Netflix released a trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 2, teasing the Hargreeves family's time-traveling misadventures as they set out to stop two more apocalypses. Based on a Dark Horse Comics series by Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá, the Netflix series is about a dysfunctional family of superhero siblings. The quirky characters leaped off the page, thanks to stellar performances from the show's ensemble cast featuring Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Justin H. Min, and Aidan Gallagher.

The Umbrella Academy season 1 followed the Hargreeves clan as they tried to piece together clues to their adopted father's death, forcing the estranged siblings to reunite under one roof for the first time in years. Smoothly interwoven flashbacks unraveled some of their adopted father's twisted history, detailed the events leading to their breakup, and chronicled their sister's descent into madness. The season finale found the Hargreeves confronting their sister, Vanya, but ultimately failing to stop the end of the world. To set things right, they travel back in time to prevent the events from occurring.

The newly released trailer for season 2 of The Umbrella Academy promises twice the action, double the weirdness and multiple world-ending scenarios to avoid. The 3-minute first-look wastes no time in setting the stage for the Hargreeves time-traveling exploits, quickly establishing the season's central conflict before introducing several new characters, plot twists, and settings. Netflix released the trailer via YouTube, which you can check out below:

Season 1 ended with the moon exploding and raining down on an unsuspecting Earth, causing the literal end of the world. The team travels back in time to try to avert this apocalyptic scenario, but in typical Hargreeves fashion, they only succeed in complicating things. Starting with the fact that not all of the sibling's time-travel to the same place or year, Five ends up in the 60s just in time to witness the end of the world (again) and quickly realizes their time travel is the cause of this second world-ending catastrophe. As for the rest of the siblings, they end up scattered throughout the 60s, some having lived for years displaced in time.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 looks like it follows Five as he hops around in the 1960s to reunite his siblings and convince them (once again) to stop the apocalypse. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the trailer is that, unlike in the comics, Ellen Page's Vanya still plays a significant role in the group dynamic. Comic book Vanya is left paralyzed with no memories after the confrontation with her siblings in the concert hall, but, as the season 2 trailer reveals, her TV counterpart doesn't suffer the same fate.

The trailer also provides quick glimpses of some of the new threats the team will face. The most intriguing, by far, is the guy with the fishbowl for a head. In the comics, this character is named Carmichael, a Shubunkin Goldfish attached to a human body who functions as Five's boss in a shadowy organization called the Commission. Carmichael orders Five to assassinate President John F. Kennedy (something he refuses to do leading to yet another end of the world scenario), and his presence in the trailer indicates the Netflix adaptation might follow a similar story beat. Whether or not the series follows the comics storyline or uses it to set up something entirely different remains to be seen. Thankfully, the wait is almost over as The Umbrella Academy season 2 lands on Netflix on July 31.
