The Umbrella Academy released more posters for its upcoming season 2, and though they look like regular promotional material, they might be hiding some clues about the Hargreeves’ upcoming adventures. Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy made its Netflix debut in February 2019 and became a big hit, even surpassing one of Netflix’s most popular titles: Stranger Things. A few months later, it was officially renewed for a second season.

The Umbrella Academy follows the dysfunctional family of adopted siblings, the Hargreeves. Them, along with other 36 children around the world, were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances, as none of their mothers was pregnant when the day began. Seven of those kids were quickly adopted by the eccentric scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who as the kids developed unique sets of superpowers, trained them and formed a superhero team called “the Umbrella Academy”. Sadly, Reginald wasn’t a good father figure, and the kids ended up going on their own ways, only reuniting years later after Reginald’s death.

The Hargreeves were forced to work together to stop the apocalypse, which turned out to be caused by their supposedly powerless sister, Vanya (Ellen Page). Unfortunately, they weren’t able to prevent the end of the world, and so their only solution was to jump through time and space to save themselves. Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will catch up with the Hargreeves, who jumped back in time, though it's unknown exactly when they landed. Season 2 now has a release date of July 31, and Netflix has begun its marketing campaign with the release of character posters, which might have some clues about the setting and more.

The Hargreeves Are Out Of Order

The Umbrella Academy season 2 what the posters reveal

The team behind The Umbrella Academy decided to share the aforementioned posters out of order, which immediately caught the attention of fans. The first one was Ben, followed by Klaus, Allison, Luther, Diego, Vanya, and Five. Though it might seem like nothing special – more so as the order in which Reginald named them has been called into question – the order of the posters could hint at where the siblings will be in season 2. It has been theorized by some fans that the Hargreeves will land in the same year but not the same place, and will end up scattered around the world.

It took Five decades to figure out the equation to go back in time, and when he did, he reverted to his 13-year old body. Five managed to land exactly when and where he wanted, but he had never made a jump with six other people (Ben included, of course). It’s possible, then, that they all landed in different places, forcing them to live their own lives while looking for the rest. The (seemingly) random order in which the season 2 posters were released could hint at this, though Ben and Klaus would land on the same place as Ben can’t really appear or materialize without Klaus’ help. In addition to that, the outfits of the siblings are a hint of the era they will live in now (except, of course, Ben’s clothes), supporting the theory that they will go back to the 1960s, just like in the comics.

What Else The Hargreeves Posters Being Out Of Order Could Mean

If not about when and where the Hargreeves will be, then the order of the posters could hint at something much darker and sadder. A fan on twitter theorized that the posters are in the order of most to least likely to die in season 2 - and it’s not a crazy thought when looking at the strengths and weaknesses of each character. As mean as it sounds, Ben’s poster was released first because he’s already dead, and Klaus was next because of his powers and struggles, as he can communicate with the dead and temporarily make them corporeal, and has been dealing with drug addiction for years.

Next is Allison, who almost died after Vanya sliced her neck with the bow of her violin (and who, interestingly, doesn’t have a scar, at least on the poster), and Luther might be more vulnerable than his physical appearance suggests as all the experimentation he went through could have left him with some weaknesses. Diego’s reflexes, ability to curve the trajectory of anything he throws, and his mastery in the use of knives are on his side, giving him slightly more chances of surviving than Luther. Then comes Vanya, the most powerful of the Hargreeves siblings though not fully invincible, and last but not least, Five, whose ability to jump through time and space allows him to escape from any attack. Other fans believe it’s not about literal death but a metaphorical one, making way for some much needed growth in the character’s lives. However, some believe that 6431275 is a hint to the date and time they landed in: 6:43, January 2, 1975. Their outfits have a 1960s/1970s vibe, so it could be possible that season 2 will be set in the mid-1970s.

What The Blood On Five’s Face Could Be From

Another detail that caught the attention of fans is the blood on Five’s face. Without counting the apocalypse, which was caused by Vanya, Five is the one who has killed the most people, as that was his job when recruited by the Commission – and he kept doing it when he came back, though this time he killed a lot of agents from the Commission. It’s not surprising, then, that his face is splattered with blood on the poster, but it could also have a connection to Five’s comic book arc.

In the Dallas storyline, Five goes back to the 1960s to fulfill the mission of killing John F. Kennedy, though the one who ends up killing him is Allison, through a rumor. The blood could be hinting at Five carrying on with the mission himself – or, simply, he continues to kill the temps that go after him, as the Commission surely won’t stop looking for him. Of course, this depends on when The Umbrella Academy season 2 will be set, though Kennedy could be changed for someone else if they landed in the 1970s. Now that the new season has an official release date, fans just have to wait for a trailer to be released, which will hopefully offer clearer clues.
