The showrunner of The Umbrella Academy, Steve Blackman, has given an update on the show's potential season 4. Adapted from the Dark Horse comics of the same name, which are written by My Chemical Romance star Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix series that debuted on the streaming service in 2019, and would become the most streamed series that year. The Umbrella Academy season 2 was then quickly confirmed, with the most recent season 3 releasing on June 22, 2o22.
Assembled into a dysfunctional, superpowered family by their adoptive father, The Umbrella Academy follows the seven Hargreeves siblings as they struggle to find their place in the world after a childhood of superhero fame. After their father dies, the family is brought back together just in time to save the world from ending, only to realize that they were the cause of the apocalypse. While the series has loosely followed the plot of Way's originals comics, The Umbrella Academy season 3 marked a divergence in the show's path. As Way is still writing new Umbrella Academy comics, the graphic novels and television adaptation are embarking on their own independent plot lines for the first time. Season 3 has received generally positive reviews from critics and fans alike, causing many to wonder already whether The Umbrella Academy season 4 is on its way.
In an exclusive Screen Rant interview with Blackman, the showrunner commented on The Umbrella Academy's potential season 4. While the show has not been officially renewed yet, Blackman says that he already knows what The Umbrella Academy season 4 would have in store for the Hargreeves siblings, and he's simply waiting on the green light. Blackman says that he, just like everyone else, must wait and see if the show will be offered another installment:
Exclusive: "All I can say is I know what season 4 is, but we haven't been picked up yet. Our fingers are crossed, we hope to be picked up, but we'll have to wait and see like everybody else."
Given its continued popularity, it's likely that The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be confirmed as per Blackman's hopes. Within the first month of season 1's release, Netflix announced that The Umbrella Academy had been streamed by over 45 million viewers. Close behind, season 2 was streamed by over 43 million viewers in the first month, and held the title of the sixth most-watched television show of 2020. While The Umbrella Academy falls behind in numbers gained by other Netflix hit series like Stranger Things and Bridgerton, it is still one of the streamer's most popular titles, and fans are already eager for news of another installment just days after season 3's release.
While Blackman is just as in the dark about the renewal of the series as viewers are, fans can rest easy knowing that there are still plans for season 4. Though Blackman didn't disclose any information about what a potential The Umbrella Academy season 4 might look like, he seems confident in being able to write another season should the show be renewed. Despite another season's worth of story ready to be told, however, it remains to be seen whether The Umbrella Academy will be given that chance.
