While Netflix prepares for the arrival of the third season of The Umbrella Academy, a batch of character posters reveals a big change from the comics regarding an important location in this new season. The rise of the superhero genre in film and TV has made way for darker and lesser-known stories to be adapted to other media, and among those is The Umbrella Academy. Created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy made the jump from the comic book pages to TV/streaming thanks to Netflix in February 2019, becoming one of the platform’s most popular titles, and it’s now getting ready for its third season.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings with superpowers and a mysterious origin that they are still trying to decipher. The Umbrella Academy season 1 saw the Hargreeves joining forces again to prevent the end of the world after being apart for years, but they were unable to stop the apocalypse and their only solution was traveling back in time to a safer place. Season 2 reunited viewers with the team in Dallas, Texas, in the 1960s, where they learned that they are not the only ones from the 43 babies born on the same day and under the same mysterious circumstances to have superpowers. Now, although plot details for The Umbrella Academy season 3 remain a mystery, there are hints of where it will take the Hargreeves, and one of the most important new settings will be Hotel Oblivion.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode titles were revealed in 2021, giving the audience an idea of what to expect, and the title that stood out the most was “Oblivion”. In the Umbrella Academy comics, there’s a Hotel Oblivion and it’s a key location as it’s not only linked to Reginald Hargreeves but to some of the most dangerous villains the team has encountered, and while season 3 has confirmed to include this nightmarish place, a batch of character posters reveals a big change from the source material, as the suitcases of each of the Hargreeves have a sticker for “Hotel Obsidian”.

Umbrella Academy posters reveal change from comics Hotel Obsidian

Each season of the Umbrella Academy has been based on a volume of the comic book series: season 1 was based on Apocalypse Suite, season 2 on Dallas, and season 3 will be all about Hotel Oblivion. This place was built by Reginald Hargreeves, and it looks like a luxury hotel on the outside, but it’s actually a prison for all the villains the Umbrella Academy has defeated. However, it’s more like a torture chamber for its prisoners, as the rooms have self-help material to push the residents to “rehabilitate”, the food has no flavor, the TVs show surreal cartoons, and the view out of the windows is that if a strange and nightmarish dimension. Now, the stickers read “Hotel Obsidian” instead of “Hotel Oblivion”, which could mean a couple of things: either its a disguise for the hotel’s real purpose, maybe even posing as a real hotel with the horrors of the prison kept hidden, or Obsidian is Oblivion from a different timeline – after all, the Hargreeves are now in a different one where instead of the Umbrella Academy, Reginald created the Sparrow Academy.

Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has already made a bunch of changes to the source material to fit its tone, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Hotel Oblivion also goes through major changes – still, it’s strange that the season finale is titled “Oblivion” while the hotel is being referred to as “Obsidian”. The whole theme for the marketing of The Umbrella Academy season 3 has been travel, with the characters holding suitcases and these having stickers from different places (which could be hinting at their birthplaces), so Hotel Obsidian could end up being more than a prison and could house a different way of traveling through space and time, similar to the Televator, which was hinted at in season 2. The Umbrella Academy season 3 has a lot of mysteries to solve, and one of the biggest questions around it is how it will add Hotel Oblivion to the mix, and it all points at it not being what the comic books showed.
