Umbrella Academy Season 2: What Klaus' Powers Could Be (If He Was Sober)

Robert Sheehan as Klaus and Justin Min as Ben in The Umbrella Academy

How powerful could a sober Klaus be in The Umbrella Academy season 2? Wonderfully portrayed by Robert Sheehan, The Umbrella Academy's Klaus is perhaps the most damaged of the Hargreeves siblings. Not only did he have to endure the same tough, loveless upbringing as the others, he also had to contend with abilities that haunt him to this day, quite literally. Known in the comic series as the Seance, Klaus is able to see and commune with the dead and in a desperate move to stop the ghosts appearing as he goes about his daily business, Klaus descended into a life of alcohol and drug addiction.

For most of The Umbrella Academy season 1, Klaus is only able to conjure his deceased brother, Ben, and the duo share sarcastic quips throughout. After being kidnapped and forced into sobriety, however, Klaus began seeing the departed victims of his captors, Hazel and Cha-Cha. After being knocked out in a fight, Klaus finally makes contact with the siblings' dead father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who reveals that substance abuse has prevented Klaus from unleashing his true potential, which goes far beyond merely seeing ghosts. In response to this, The Umbrella Academy's season 1 finale sees Klaus physically manifest Ben's spirit, allowing the Horror to use his powers on the Commission's armed thugs from beyond the grave.

Assuming Klaus stays sober in season 2, how much more could his abilities develop? With regards to Number 4's new ability to summon the dead, the selection of ghosts available to Klaus seem directly related to the people in his vicinity. He's constantly able to see Ben because the two are brothers, and a newly-sober Klaus could see the victims of Hazel and Cha-Cha because their souls were attached to their murderers. This gives Klaus a huge range of potential ghosts to summon in season 2. Depending on who the Academy encounter, Klaus could manifest soldiers, Sir Reginald, or possibly even recently deceased characters such as Pogo and Leonard Peabody, who could prove useful in the group's mission to stop the apocalypse.

The Umbrella Academy - Klaus

Beyond Klaus' new summoning powers, the original Umbrella Academy comic books reveal much more about his latent potential. Comic Klaus' gifts are more wide-ranging than on TV and include levitation, possession of living people and telekinesis. Communicating with the dead is but one trick in Klaus' arsenal. It would arguably be impractical for the Klaus in Netflix's live-action version of The Umbrella Academy to develop all the abilities of his comic counterpart, since this would make him drastically over-powered, but a few features could certainly be carried over.

Possession is both the most interesting and the most likely technique Klaus could learn in The Umbrella Academy season 2. After turning Ben's soul into a physical entity, the next logical step for Klaus could be taking out his own soul and slotting it into someone else. Given the mischievous nature of both Klaus and The Umbrella Academy as a series, seeing the rowdy drunkard possessing his fellow siblings could be a source of much hilarity in the episodes to come.

Telekinesis might not provide as many laughs, but would certainly ensure Klaus' promotion from lookout duty on future missions and would no doubt also lead to some visually impressive set-pieces, as he psychically hurls nearby items at his enemies. Unfortunately, this particular superpower might be a little too far removed from Klaus' current paranormal move set and perhaps feels more at home on page, rather than the screen.

All of the Academy members have the potential to expand their abilities in season 2 (apart from Diego - throwing stuff is throwing stuff at the end of the day) and this has already been demonstrated by both Klaus and Vanya. Still, it's Number 4 who demonstrates the most exciting potential and while a telekinetic, levitating master of souls might be too much to expect, Klaus' manipulation of the afterlife could lead to some soul-swapping fun when The Umbrella Academy returns.
