Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy changed a lot of things from the source material, but it included some subtle references to some of the major events from the comics, including one that makes Vanya’s transformation into the White Violin even darker. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy made its debut on Netflix in February 2019 and was a big success, making it one of the platform’s most popular series of the year.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves family of adopted siblings. All seven of them, along with other 36 babies, were born on October 1, 1989, at the same time, and none of their mothers was pregnant when the day began. This curious event caught the attention of eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who adopted as many of those children as he could, and he only got seven. As they began to develop unique sets of superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed the superhero team called “the Umbrella Academy”. Sadly, Reginald wasn’t a good parent, and the Hargreeves ended up parting ways, reuniting years later after the death of their father and to stop the approaching apocalypse.

One of the children, Vanya (a.k.a. Seven), grew up thinking she was powerless, and was left behind by her siblings and father. Vanya was on medication her whole life, and she later learned it was given to her to tame her powers, and her sister Allison used her own to make her believe she was ordinary. Vanya turned out to be the source of the apocalypse as she was actually the most powerful of all the Hargreeves, and she went through a full transformation, though not as radical as the one in the comics. However, the series included a subtle detail referencing her White Violin look in the comics, and it actually makes her transformation even darker.

An eagle-eyed viewer shared on Reddit a semi-hidden detail in a scene from episode 9, “Changes”. After Vanya sliced Allison’s throat with the bow of her violin, she was taken away from her sister’s body by Leonard, who gave her a bath while she was still in a state of shock. In that scene, there’s blood running down her throat, mirroring the strings from her White Violin transformation in the comics. Vanya’s story is slightly different in the source material, as the release of her powers and her physical transformation are the result of some heavy experimentation done to her by Leonard Peabody, and the result is Vanya transforming into a human white violin, with strings running down her body.

The White Violin from the comics also has a maniac and more dangerous personality than the Vanya from the show, but that small but important detail mirroring the strings could be a sign of Vanya’s true nature not been fully explored yet. Plot details on The Umbrella Academy season 2 are still unknown, so it’s a mystery if it will focus on Vanya or something else, but there’s surely more to explore when it comes to Vanya, the extent of her powers, and how these affect her.
